Open Library is a project by the Internet Archive which offers ebook lending to participating libraries. Borrow up to 5 e-books for 2 weeks each, either in-browser or as a PDF or ePub from over 100,000, mainly 20th century titles.  You must sign up for a free Open Library account to be able to borrow ebooks. Also included are over 1,000,000 free and accessible ebook titles, predominately classical literature.

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

Biographies of the men and women who have shaped British history and culture, worldwide, from the Romans to the 21st century. The Dictionary offers authoritative, up-to-date biographies written by named, specialist authors. Search a specific name or find  biographies by searching fields of interest/occupations, time periods, places, or religious affiliation. You can also browse by theme (generally groups of people such as Cavalier poets or Yorkists). Biographies of living people are not included.
