Craft Revival Project

NEWSLETTER June 2006

HERITAGE PARTNERS GRANT

The Hunter Library was successful in its application to the State Library for funds to continue the Craft Revival Project.  The Hunter was awarded $157,000 in LSTA funds, only the second institutional applicant in North Carolina to receive a Heritage Partners grant.  The library and its partners will use these funds to implement the second year plan of the project.  Along with the award were a few changes to our plan, made at the suggestion of the LSTA review committee.  As soon as we work out the details and changes to our Year II implementation plan, I will pass these along to you.

DIRECTORS’ DINNER

July is off and running.  On July 24, the directors of the project’s Heritage Partner sites will attend a dinner and evening social hosted by WCU Chancellor John Bardo and Provost Kyle Carter.  Bil and I are currently working on a Power Point presentation that will explain the project and its significance to them.  We came close to our goal of 100% participation and feel it is important that Partner’s directors be well informed and aware of the work being done by the project team.

STUDENT RECRUITMENT

We’ve received a number of excellent applications for the graduate student assistantships.   We are still taking applications if you have someone you’d like to recruit for these positions.  Next month, we will again be sending out a note through the WCU community to recruit undergrads.

POSTER, & POSTCARDS

The Craft Revival project now has posters and postcards advertising our URL.  Thanks to the excellent work done by Cornerstone Printing in Waynesville, we have plenty of these to go around.  We will be distributing them out of Special Collections to anyone who would like one and, once the students come on board, we’ll be doing a bulk mailing to get them out to the public and to area schools and libraries.

FALL ROLLOUT

We have already begun to plan for a major rollout of the project that will begin in September.  The rollout will involve a significant publicity campaign, distribution of the posters, and a series of talks presented at area libraries.  We will be teaming up with the Mountain Heritage Center, presenting the first of these talks during the week preceding Mountain Heritage Day.  We are also planning a mini display at both the MHC and the Hunter Library.

FALL ADVISORY MEETING

Our fall Advisory Meeting will be held in September.  Last year, we met mostly mid-week; Wednesdays seemed to be a good day for all.  Tuesday and Thursday are alternate choices.  If you are an Advisor or Partner, please let me know if there are any Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays that won’t work for you.

Looking forward to a productive year.
