Craft Revival Project

Kick-off reception

The Hunter Library—in partnership with Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, and the Cherokee Preservation Foundation—hosted a reception to kick-off the project’s 2008-2009 year.  Over the course of the evening, the event attracted over 100 visitors who sampled authentic foods provided by the Native American Indian Women’s Association. From Qualla’s entryway, visitors had a good few of the poll-jumpers who were performing across the road as part of the Festival of Native People. On view in Qualla’s gallery was work from its permanent collection. A couple of temporary displays illustrated the project. A powerpoint about the Craft Revival and Cherokee baskets was shown on a large screen TV in the gallery.

News articles

A reporter from the Smoky Mountain News came to the event and wrote 2 great pieces that came out in the next week’s paper. The project was also featured on the paper’s cover.  Both articles are online.

Grant Account

Margaret and I are working with the university to get our 08-09 accounts set up.  We have purchased external hard drives for all Partners and are working on purchasing new equipment for the Museum of the Cherokee Indian.  Heritage Partners should contact Robin Hitch directly to talk about installation of external hardrives.  These one terabyte hardrives will dramatically increase the capacity of project computers to hold a large number of image files.

Home Team

We’ve worked with Content DM to solve the problem of scrambled metadata; hopefully, that won’t happen again. Anna and Tim are working out roles, responsibilities, and an orientation for the Hunter’s new Metadata Librarian, Anna Craft. Anna begins early next month.  Melissa continues to swap out the 72 dpi images for those at 300 dpi, giving database images consistency and improved visibility. Ginny has “retired” from the Home Team but will be working with us periodically on specific projects, beginning with a finding aid for the Campbell Folk School.

Yearend tallies
