Craft Revival Project

Newsletter: December 2007

Advisory Meeting

We held our fall Advisory meeting on December 7th and welcomed new Advisor, Jenny Moore, Associate Director of HandMade in America as part of our team.  Returning to the 2007-2008 Advisory Group are:

Qualla Arts and Crafts

Qualla Arts joins the project as a new Heritage Partner.  Robin Hitch of the Hunter Library Systems Department is working with Vicki Ledford and Qualla staff to install their equipment.  Qualla now has a computer workstation with scanner.  Qualla staff will receive training on this equipment and will be working with Tonya Carroll and Anna on basket documentation in January.

Basket Documentation

Tonya worked on the Craft Revival project for three semesters and has just graduated with a degree in History and Cherokee Studies.  She is joining the staff as a scanning and research assistant as of January 1st.  The project will be hiring an undergraduate student to take her place on the student team.  Tonya and Anna were recently pictured in the Cherokee One Feather and Asheville Citizen-Times with baskets from the Qualla’s collection.

Home Team and Remediation

The Home Team has been meeting to review what we want to complete before our on-site review, scheduled for early January.  With a fuller team in place, we expect to be able to demonstrate the Hunter Library’s capacity to complete a digital project that meets state standards. With almost 2,000 items in the database, remediation is time-consuming and requires the coordination of several members of the team: Tim Carstens (authority verification and uploading new items), Ginny Daley (reviewing and correcting metadata), students (image corrections), and Melissa Young (compound image corrections and database enhancements).

Audio/video

The Mountain Heritage Center has sent in a number of video clips that the Home Team is integrating into the database in a way that functions for all viewers.  This is not as easy as it sounds, as viewing video often requires system requirements over and above the project’s audience targets.  In other words, the project is designed to function in lower tech environments, like public schools, so everything we do must meet those requirements.  Melissa is working with Peter Koch of the MHC and David Smith of NCCAT to craft a working video viewing system.

Interim site visit

Heritage Partners and project Home Team will meet at the Mountain Heritage Center at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 11th to meet the team from Raleigh.  The day will begin with an overview of this year’s work and then the group will break out into individual sessions.  We have ordered a buffet lunch so there is no need to RSVP whether or not you are attending.  Here is the schedule for the day:

9:00-11:00       Group presentation and questions from Review Team
