We have created a uniform display format for Research Guides for the ease of use of our patrons. Authors have free reign over the content of these guides, but the pages will be fit to the template as explained below.
Research Guides may be submitted to Web Services in HTML or Word document format.
Research Guides are to be evaluated for revision every 6 months. Web Services will set up a revision schedule with the author and will remind the author that the page needs to be evaluated and signed off on. Any authors who do not evaluate their site on this schedule will be referred to Debbie Paulson for follow up.
Example:
HTML metatag title = Hunter Library: Research Guide: Company and Organization
Information
Yellow title bar = Company and Organization Information
Authors are free to create any topic headings they need to express the resources for their guide.
The following are some topic headings that other people have used:
Bibliographies & Guides
Biographical Sources
Directories
Encyclopedias & Dictionaries
Handbooks & Manuals
Journal Articles & Indexes
Other Resources
Subjects in the Library Catalog
Websites
Topics can be in any order - EXCEPT if you wish to link to an academic department - it should be listed last in the menu at the top of the page. This link should be written in the format: WCU Department of Physics. Topics should be in the same order on the page as they are in the menu.
Use additional “Top of Page” anchors between topics to navigate long length pages.
Example:
Title of the Resource 5 vols. (Annual)
Annotation: this can be text explaining why a resource is valuable or any
other descriptor. It can be a phrase, a sentence, or a paragraph. It can
include author name, publishing info, anything you want to write to describe
the item.
Call Number or Library Location
http://www.urloftheitem.com
Title is mandatory and goes first. The title row can also include number of volumes in a set, publishing frequency (Annual, Biennial, etc.), and date range (1910-present). Links to webpages or catalog records go in the title.
Call Number or library location and written URL are strongly suggested and go last. The URL is not linked as the last part of the entry.
Annotation is entirely up to the author (both whether to have an annotation and its content).
Items may be linked to their catalog record. They are linked in their title, not their call number. The decision to link or not to link is up to the author. We strongly suggest linking to the catalog record.
Items may be duplicated in multiple topics on one guide (i.e. the same website can be listed in Web Pages and in Careers). This is up to the author.
Links to Hunter Library web pages must be in the http://library.wcu.edu/ format, not the http://www.wcu.edu/library/ format.
