Photographs of Camp Toco

Horace Kephart added these photographs of his first camp in western North Carolina to the first page of his personal album. This semi-permanent camp served as his home for nearly three months before he relocated to Hazel Creek. Here, Kephart began his observations of the region and its people in preparation for future publications.

The upper right photograph was used in Our Southern Highlanders with the caption "The Author's First Camp in the Smokies." This can be found on page 16 of the 1922 revised edition.
