Members: R. Banerjee, J. Brown, M. Hill, R. Hitch, S. McLaurin, and B. Whitley (chair)

The purpose of this task force is to review the condition and service/collection layout of the Hunter Library building and to recommend ways to make it more inviting and useable by our clientele. The task force must work within the confines of the primary structural elements of the building, but otherwise should not restrict their thinking in terms of budget limitations, existing organizational structures, etc. The recommendations should be divided into "quick fixes" and "long term goals". The quick fixes should address things that could likely be done this fiscal year and that do not require large budgetary expenditures. The long-term goals are projects that might require renovations, moving of collections, services, etc. The task force should indicate which quick fixes and long term goals they feel are the top two to three priorities in each category.

As part of its charge, the task force must recommend how best to spend $13,600 that is a special allocation received by the Library for furniture replacement in public areas. This recommendation with the specific items and their quantities to be purchased must be submitted to the University Librarian no later than November 13, 2000.

The task force should bring any issues that it feels needs to be addressed but do not fall under its aegis to the attention of the University Librarian.

The task force should assume that the Library will be pursuing an expanded and dynamic exhibition and display program. A display committee will be formed shortly which will be charged to work with the task force where appropriate. The task force should also assume the library will be recarpeted within the next year.

The Facilities Improvement Task Force is expected to actively solicit input from other library staff, the other operations located in the Hunter Library (e.g. Faculty Center, Writing Center, Computing Lab) and also to seek input from representatives of the student body and faculty.

Deadlines: Recommendations are due to the University Librarian by:

Furniture replacement spending plan- November 20, 2000 "Quick Fix" Recommendations - December 15, 2000 "Long term Goals" Recommendations - March 2, 2001 R. Banerjee J. Brown M.Hm R. Hitch S. McLaurin B. Whitley

I am requesting that you serve on the Hunter Library Facilities Improvement Task Force, which will be chaired by Betsy Whitley. The charge for this task force is attached.

Please let me know if you are unable to serve on this task force. Dora will set up the first meeting of the task force, so that I may attend. I appreciate your willingness to serve on this important group.

The Facilities Improvement Task force is looking for LARGE branches for LARGE dried arrangements near the front door. For this experiment, we are looking for things like twisty rhododendron or river cane-- two native plants that have obvious appeal. If you have something to contribute, talk to Betsy, Robin, Ruby, John, Sharon or Mary.

We're Looking for Changes

"Move the library to the center of campus--maybe to Dodson Cafeteria."
"Velcro artifacts to the orange HVAC ducts."
"Bring back the old Hunter Library roof garden."

Since its creation in November, the Hunter Library Facilities Improvement Task Force has not lacked input. If you've walked in the library doors lately, you've already seen changes made with new lamps, rearranged seating and raised window blinds near the entrance. These are humble beginnings to fulfil the task force's purpose of making Hunter Library more useful and inviting.

Hunter has changed little since the new addition was built in 1982. Modifications were made after the1989 fire when some walls were moved and computers were added to provide online services. More recently the computer lab, classroom and CATA were added. But "the look" has remained in the 1970's. Soon you can expect to see new chairs and plants, as well as new carpeting for the main floor which is scheduled for early summer.

Do you think service desks, collections, or shelving need to be moved? Have you seen signage or lighting that you would recommend? What other changes would you like to see made in Hunter Library? Contact Betsy Whitley with your suggestions.
