R. P. Crawford to Wm. Eastis September 29, 1861

R. P. Crawford, in camp near Wilmington, North Carolina, Michels [Mitchells] Sound, to his cousin, Wm. Eastis [also, Estes, Estice], September 29, 1861. Crawford writes of the regiment’s encampment near the sea coast, his health, camp conditions, new uniforms and guns that have been issued, ships in the Union fleet, and the position of Union troops.

Robert P. Crawford of Jackson County, North Carolina, enlisted in May, 1861, and was assigned to the North Carolina 25th Infantry Regiment, Company B (North Carolina Troops, vol. 7, p. 372).

Thomas Lanier Clingman was made a colonel in the 25th Regiment in August, 1861 (North Carolina Troops, vol. 7, p. 354). Thaddeus Dillard Bryson of Jackson County, North Carolina, was a captain in Company B after May, 1861 (North Carolina Troops, vol. 7, p. 368). Also, as mentioned in Crawford’s letter, the soldiers were issued uniforms and firearms in September, 1861 (North Carolina Troops, vol. 7, p. 350).
