A Cherokee Reservation. We learn that Gen. R. M. Saunders of this
town, and the Rev. Humphrey Posey of Macon County, have been appointed by the
President of the United States, Commissioners under an appropriation made
at the last session of Congress, for purchasing such Reservation of Land as
are yet claimed by the Cherokee Indians within the limits of North Carolina.
There is no doubt but the sum appropriated, ($20,000) will be amply sufficient
to make the purchase; so that we now have a certainty that the State will be
freed from those claims, whose tendency, has been greatly to embarrass the sale
of her Cherokee lands, and retard the settlement of that interesting portion
of territory.
