Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning 2017

May 16, 17, & 18, 2017 (9am - 4pm each day)

It's time to mark your calendar and register for the New and Improved Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning (SITL) which will be held at NCCAT this year!  We have redesigned this seminar to give faculty more of what they want and need to be successful in the classroom.  The theme for this year's SITL is "Take Your Teaching to the Next Level."  There will be an all day Quality Matters workshop, followed by two days consisting of four different mini sessions each day.  Each session is geared towards helping faculty to improve, enhance, and innovate their teaching techniques.  Lunch, snacks and drinks will also be provided each day.  Remember, if you want to Step Up your teaching, please join us for SITL 2017!  For more information, please contact Michele Hawes at ext. 2927.  The SITL Agenda is also available here

Topics to be covered:

In addition to the specific sessions listed below, we will be offering General Course Improvement with 1-on-1 assistance all day on Day 2 and Day 3 for any Blackboard, Panopto, Collaborate, Course Design, Pedagogy, or any other area that faculty would like assistance with.

Day One (May 16, 2017) Applying the Quality Matters Rubric to Your Online Course: This will be a day-long workshop where you will learn about some best practices of course design based on Quality Matters guidelines.

Day Two (May 17, 2017) Mini Sessions will be on: Student Learning Outcomes, Online Teaching, 8 Best Teaching Practices, and Teaching with Technology

Day Three (May 18, 2017) Mini Sessions will be on: Student Learning Outcomes - Assessments, Universal Design (UDL), Applying the 8 Best Teaching Practices, and Writing for Research

TEACHING AND LEARNING

The Coulter Faculty Commons Educational Development team assist faculty with all aspects of teaching.  Consultation topics include, but are not limited to, course analysis, rubrics, syllabus and schedule construction, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning projects, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and hybrid course design.  Consultations may also cover work-life balance and other issues related to faculty support.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

The Coulter Faculty Commons Educational Technology team provide support and assistance with many forms of classroom technology tools, digital media, and online learning techniques.  With the ever changing world of technology, it is often very difficult to maintain proficiency across all platforms.  The CFC Ed Tech team is here to help instructors deal with the changing technology and help them to utilize the right tools to create engaging and inspiring courses.

BLACKBOARD

Blackboard 9.1 is the Learning Management System (LMS) software application utilized at Western Carolina University to provide online course work.  Blackboard enhances the quality of online and face-to-face instruction and is used to monitor, document, and manage online and classroom events and assignments.  Blackboard provides a reliable means to engage students in an online environment and can greatly improve the educational experience of both students and instructors.

RESEARCH SUPPORT

The Coulter Faculty Commons, in collaboration with the Office of Research Administration, recognizes that the faculty of Western Carolina University engage in multiple forms of scholarship. The CFC research division can assist faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants with research design and research methods for publications, grant proposals, dissertations, theses, and other projects. This support is provided through consultations and scholarship tools and resources.
