About the Coulter Faculty Commons
ABOUT THE COULTER FACULTY COMMONS
The CFC's staff strive to lead our faculty members through the promotion of an established
blend of pedagogy, technology, and research, not only to support success in the classroom,
but also professional development by designing activities and consultations that spread
excitement for scholarly growth. We want Western Carolina University faculty to know
they are a part of an academic community where there are continuous open discussions
and support for teaching and learning activities. Where senior faculty remember why
they first became teachers and where junior faculty seek excellence in teaching and
research, and where new faculty and graduate teaching assistants experience a wise
and compassionate teaching internship or apprenticeship.

TEACHING AND LEARNING
The Coulter Faculty Commons Educational Development team assist faculty with all aspects
of teaching. Consultation topics include, but are not limited to, course analysis,
rubrics, syllabus and schedule construction, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
projects, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and hybrid course design. Consultations
may also cover work-life balance and other issues related to faculty support.
The Coulter Faculty Commons Educational Technology team provide support and assistance
with many forms of classroom technology tools, digital media, and online learning
techniques. With the ever changing world of technology, it is often very difficult
to maintain proficiency across all platforms. The CFC Ed Tech team is here to help
instructors deal with the changing technology and help them to utilize the right tools
to create engaging and inspiring courses.
Blackboard 9.1 is the Learning Management System (LMS) software application utilized
at Western Carolina University to provide online course work. Blackboard enhances
the quality of online and face-to-face instruction and is used to monitor, document,
and manage online and classroom events and assignments. Blackboard provides a reliable
means to engage students in an online environment and can greatly improve the educational
experience of both students and instructors.
The Coulter Faculty Commons, in collaboration with the Office of Research Administration,
recognizes that the faculty of Western Carolina University engage in multiple forms
of scholarship. The CFC research division can assist faculty, staff, and graduate
teaching assistants with research design and research methods for publications, grant
proposals, dissertations, theses, and other projects. This support is provided through
consultations and scholarship tools and resources.
