Dr. Brian Railsback, Professor of English, is the founding Dean of The Honors College at Western Carolina University. He has published numerous scholarly articles and book chapters, and has authored three books, Parallel Expeditions: Charles Darwin and the Art of John Steinbeck, The Darkest Clearing (novel), and in 2013, A Going Concern (novel). He co-edited A John Steinbeck Encyclopedia and the Library of America edition, John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley and Later Novels. In 2013, he was interviewed by Susan Stamberg for a National Public Radio feature on F. Scott Fitzgerald. He won the 2006 Prose for Papa (Hemingway) Short Story Award. In 2004, he was named University Scholar at WCU.
