The School of Health Sciences aspires to develop exceptional leaders in the health professions through active learning and community engagement in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative learning environment.  Our experienced faculty are dedicated educators, scholars, and clinicians committed to their fields and the academic preparation of students.  Academic programs are designed to cultivate exceptional health professionals through the thoughtful and intentional  curricular design of each program, including lab experiences, internships, clinical education, and capstone projects.  Opportunities for community engagement, service learning, international travel programs, independent study, and student-faculty research further enhance the experience and prepare students for their career.

Athletic Training

Athletic Trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who provide patient-centered care in collaboration with a physician.  As part of the healthcare team, services provided by ATs include injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.  The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program is a 2-year program preparing gradutes to be professionally engaged while delivering high quality patient-centered care as athletic trainers.  Learn more about MSAT

Emergency Medical Care

Paramedics and EMTs are the front-line in the on-going efforts to improve the emergency health care delivery systems in America. Paramedics respond to medical and traumatic emergencies, stabilize patients on-scene using state-of-the-art medical technology, and monitor patients during transport to hospitals and trauma centers.  Learn more about EMC


Environmental Health Sciences

Environmental Health recognizes that our well-being depends upon our social and physical environment, as well as our lifestyle. The Environmental Health Program is focused on the protection of human health from biological, chemical, and physical hazards in the environment. Graduates of the department are highly trained scientists and professionals capable of identifying and measuring environmental hazards and effective management and control of those hazards. Integrated Health Sciences

IHS students

 

Integrated Health Sciences prepares students through a comprehensive and well-rounded curriculum for employment and/or advanced graduate study in a myriad of health, medical, and wellness domains. This flexible ONLINE program is designed for students with backgrounds in healthcare administration and business, health-related education, or clinical practice who aspire to leadership roles in the industry, or students preparing to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are experts in food and nutrition. They advise people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal. They may do so through management, clinical practice, community and public health, business, or education and research. Learn more about ND


Recreational Therapy

Recreational therapists help people improve their holistic health and well-being, including reducing stress and improving coping skills; recovering basic physical and mental abilities; and building confidence to socialize effectively. Recreational therapy students learn to use active interventions when working with individuals with illnesses or disabling conditions. Learn more about RT

Students within the School of Health Sciences will be assigned an advisor that supports success within their program and success at Western Carolina University. Students are asked to meet with their advisor at least once a semester, allowing students the chance to have one-on-one attention where they can discuss: current and future classes, registration, academic and professional goals, graduate/professional programs, graduation, and campus resources.  Learn more about the Student Services Center
