Introduction
A template has been developed to help
guide you through personalizing an electronic student portfolio.
This portfolio template is a guide for continuously tracking and providing
public access to a comprehensive active resume of your college career.
This portfolio has been preloaded on your VAX account and a copy is also
available at the following web address: http://www.wcu.edu/jumpstart/webport/portfolio/index.html

-
The ~ symbol is located on the top left side
of your keyboard beside the number 1.
-
Add your VAX username after the ~
-
Press the Enter key on your keyboard
-
This is your Web address. You can now
edit, save, and publish those changes back to your VAX account.
-
Click on "File" and select "Edit Page"
-
You are now working in the Netscape Composer
feature of Netscape.
Formatting
Text
-
Editing Text
-
This is similar to using any word processing
program. To edit any of the text, highlight the word(s) to
be edited. To replace the text, simply type and the highlighted text
will be replaced with what you typed. To bold, italicize, underline,
change font type/size, etc., highlight the text and either use the shortcut
buttons located on the tool bar or use the "Format" drop down menu choices.
-
Highlight the text at the top of the template
that says "Web Page Portfolio Template" and type your name.
-
Hyperlinking
Text
A hyperlink is an active link to other
Web sites or pages. You can make a hyperlink on your portfolio by
following these directions:
-
Scroll down your template page until you locate
the words "Degree Plan." The first bullet below Degree Plan is labeled
"Freshman and Sophomore Years." Highlight the words "Freshman and
Sophomore Years." Be careful not to highlight the bullet too.
-
Located on the "Composition Toolbar" (the
toolbar with shortcuts to "New," "Open," "Save," etc.) is a shortcut for
making hyperlinks. It is labeled "Link" and may have a chain link
symbol above the word link. Click one time on this shortcut.
The following dialog box should appear:
-
Under the words "Link to a page location
or local file:," type: fsplan.html
-
Click on the "OK" button located at the bottom
of this dialog box
-
We have built a freshman and sophomore years
template for you also. The name of this file is: fsplan.html.
By building a hyperlink to this file, you will enable others to view this
template. You are encouraged to modify this file to reflect courses
you plan on taking and courses that you will complete each semester.
This file is also located on your VAX account in the same location as your
Web page portfolio.
-
Saving
Saving in Netscape Communicator is similar
to saving in other computer programs. To save your changes
-
Go to the "File" menu and select "Save As"
-
When working with HTML pages (Web pages) it
is wise to save each page in a folder. The reason that you want to
do this is that Web pages frequently contain more than one file.
The Web page used as your template includes three files: one HTML file
that has the words on it and two graphics files (one for the bullets and
one for the line).
-
The first page that people see when they type
in your address must be named:
index.html
-
Publishing - Windows
Users
In order for your Web portfolio to be
seen on the Internet, you must publish it. The following instructions
will show you how to publish your portfolio from Netscape Communicator.
Publishing transfers your portfolio to your Web directory on your VAX account.
-
Click one time on the "Publish" shortcut button,
located on the "Composition Toolbar" or click on the "File" menu
and select "Publish." The following dialog box will appear:
-
In the box beside "Page Title," highlight
the word "Student" and type in your name.
-
The "HTML Filename" should be: [.www]index.html
-
The Windows operating system only uses three
letters in the file names extension (htm instead of html). Even though
there are translators that are supposed to change the "htm" to an "html,"
it is recommended that you do so here to avoid problems with publishing.
-
In the box located beneath "HTTP or FTP Location
to publish to:," type in the following:
ftp://wcuvax1.wcu.edu/
-
In the box beside "User Name," type in your
username.
-
In the box beside "Password," type in your
password.
-
Click on the "OK" button.
-
Click on the Netscape Browser icon on your
task bar (bottom of the screen). It has the Netscape symbol that
looks like a ships steering wheel.
-
You should see the template portfolio page
(the page before you started editing it). If not, in the "Location"
box, type in your Web page address.
-
If you are currently on your homepage, you
must click on the "Reload" button (located on the toolbar), in order to
view any changes you just made. The reason for this is that once
you are on a Web site, the computer temporarily downloads that image to
your computer. The image will remain the way it was first downloaded
until you either go to another site and re-enter that page or until you
"Reload" the page using the reload feature.
-
Your Web Portfolio should appear on the Internet
now. If it does not appear, re-publish your page using the instructions
above. After re-publishing, re-enter Netscape and retype your Web
address. If you are already at your address, click on the "Reload"
button on the toolbar.
Creating
an E-mail Link
-
Go back to the page you were editing (the
icon is on you task bar at the bottom of the page and looks like a blue
triangle with a pen). If you closed the page after editing it, follow the
directions below for opening and editing
a page on your disk or computer's hard drive.
-
Scroll to the bottom of your portfolio.
-
Highlight the words "E-mail Me."
-
Click on the "Link" shortcut button.
-
Locate the box below the words "Link to a
page location or local file:"
-
Type the following: mailto:
-
After the words mailto: add your e-mail address
(do not add any spaces after mailto:). Your e-mail address should
look something like this: ZZ12345@wcu.edu
