Office of CIO update on Outlook, server issues

Posted: February 22, 2006

Bob Orr on behalf of Bil Stahl:

Bil Stahl is at UNC-General Administration and asked me to update you on the status of resolving our email problems. We continue to make progress in fully restoring email services. Unisys has been very helpful in identifying and removing the changes that were made on our email systems. These corrections have helped stabilize our email environment somewhat. We are not totally out of the woods but email, at this point, is flowing as expected.  It still appears that this was an automated attack, but lessons learned will enable us to take preventative actions.  Microsoft is helping us understand the best way to assure the small amount of email delayed as a result of these issues is fully delivered.

We do anticipate scheduling some downtime in the near future to move our email applications to clean, newly installed servers. Time will be needed to move the data and applications, and we will keep you informed about scheduling this work during a time that will be the least disruptive.

Again, thank you for your patience and understanding. We all understand how much we rely upon our email and calendar systems to accomplish our work.

If you have further questions about the situation, please call the IT Services Help Desk at 227-7487.
