IT is in the process of converting users from the current Novell NetWare file sharing and printing environment to a new system based on Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
This new system will take advantage of several new technologies including clustering, a group of computers working together to run a common set of applications, and a storage area network which will increase functionality and reliability. Benefits of the new system include:
- Simplified cross-departmental file sharing
- Large increase in disk space available to the user
- Updated and supportable server operating system
- Clustered server environment for increased reliability
- Storage Area Network (SAN) which enhances reliability and greatly simplifies adding disk space
Academic offices and faculty have already been moved to the new system. Administrative offices will be moved in the next few weeks with the conversion being complete by the end of June.
