To ensure privacy and better protect the identity of students, faculty and staff, Western Carolina University is in the process of changing identification numbers and issuing new CatCards. The change is in response to state legislation that prohibits using a Social Security number (SSN) as a primary ID number except for employment purposes.
The new ID numbers all begin with “92” and, like SSNs, are nine digits long. The transition to the new ID numbers has begun.

What's my new ID number?
WCU students were sent their new number by mail in early August along with new CatCard information. Those who attended summer orientation sessions have already received the new-style card with their “92” number encoded.
To get their “92” number, faculty and staff will need to visit the ID Finder on the faculty, staff, MyCat, WIN, WebCT, or IT web pages and enter their SSN and original WIN PIN (Personal Identification Number) plus two zeros added to the end. (The WIN PIN was originally set up as a four-digit number. The default number was set as the two-digit month and two-digit year of the date of birth but some employees have changed this number.)
For security purposes, those that don't remember their PIN will need to take a picture ID to the ITS Help Desk in B32 Forsyth Building to get this number. Why is my new ID number important?
WCU students, faculty and staff must remember their new ID number. WCU's online services such as library services, MyCat and WebCT are beginning to require the new ID number and eventually it will be required by all such services.
As WCU's online services begin accepting the new ID numbers, notification will be placed on the log-in pages.
What's different about the new CatCard?
WCU services which require physical identification (such as meal plan, library services, and access to the residence halls) will accept only the new CatCard. New CatCards will be encoded with the new ID number. A barcode, not the number, will appear on the card.
These cards CANNOT have holes punched in them. The whole ID serves as an antenna, and any damage will cause them to stop working.
How do I get a new CatCard?
CatCards will be distributed to Cullowhee-based students who have not already received or picked up their new cards in the West Wing of Dodson Cafeteria beginning on Saturday, Aug. 19. The schedule is available on the CatCard Web site at http://admfin.wcu.edu/catcard/ .
Asheville-based students can pick up their CatCards from the Asheville Office in Karpen Hall after the second week of class. CatCards can be used in Asheville for library privileges only. To use the facilities and services at UNCA, Asheville-based students should secure the One Card issued by the One Card office, 120 Highsmith University Union at UNCA.
Distance students who already have a CatCard will receive a new CatCard in the mail. Those who do not have a CatCard but would like one need to email a request that includes their full name, mailing address and a digital photo to catcard@email.wcu.edu .
The CatCard Office is working on mailing new CatCards to faculty and staff members who currently have a card. If you have never had a CatCard, please visit the CatCard Office at 205 Killian Annex. All new faculty will receive a CatCard during orientation.
