Symantec AntiVirus
Corporate Edition installation
Step 1. You must
first check to see if you already have Norton AntiVirus installed on your computer
and then determine the version of the software that you are running:
You will
need to install the Symantec AntiVirus software if your computer is running a
version lower than 8.0.
Step 2. Before you install the Corporate Edition, you
must make sure you have uninstalled older versions of Norton AntiVirus or other
antivirus software from your computer:
Windows 98 / Windows XP or 2000:
- Click 'Start'
- Select 'Programs'
- Select 'Name of
AntiVirus Software'
- Select 'Uninstall'
If 'Uninstall' is not listed
under the Programs listing do the following:
- Click on 'Start'
- Select 'Settings'
- Select 'Control Panel'
- Select 'Add/Remove Programs'
- Locate and select the
older version of Norton AntiVirus or any other antivirus program in the list.
- Click the 'Remove' button
Step 3. How to install
Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition:
Before installing
Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition make sure you have saved your work and
closed all open applications.
Some installations require a reboot of the system.
If you live off campus and are using a dial-up modem, visit the IT Services
office in Forsyth B-32 to pick up a student Symantec AntiVirus CD.
- Click here to log-in
to access the Norton AntiVirus software
- Enter your WIN username,
PIN and status in the windows provided and click on "Request Access"
- Follow the download instructions
for the student version of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition; click the
'Save' button on the download window.
- Save the file to your
desktop by clicking 'Desktop' along the left side of the window.
- The file is large; it
will take a few moments to download. When it is finished downloading, double-click
the 'antivirus.exe' file on your desktop.
- Symantec will automatically
begin the installer and if you have an active internet connection it will
run LiveUpdate to update your virus definition files.
- Once the install is
complete you should see a yellow shield in your taskbar next to your clock
in the lower right-hand corner of your screen.
Step 4. How to schedule
LiveUpdate to run automatically:
New viruses are released
on a constant basis. It is important that antivirus software have the ability
to catch all of these new viruses. That is where LiveUpdate comes in. When a
new virus is discovered, Symantec releases what are called ‘Virus Definition
Files’ that update the antivirus software and give it the ability to protect
computers from new viruses.
- Open Symantec AntiVirus
by double-clicking the yellow shield icon in the taskbar near your clock or
go to ‘Start,’ select ‘Programs’ or ‘All Programs,’
select ‘Symantec Client Security’ and then ‘Symantec AntiVirus
Client.'
- Choose the ‘File’
menu option and select ‘Schedule Updates.’
- Under 'Automatic Updates'
the ‘Enable scheduled automatic updates’ checkbox should be checked.
- Press the ‘Schedule’
button
- Select the frequency
you would like to check for updates. At the least, we
recommend WEEKLY updates.
- Select when you would
like to update. This should be a time when your computer will be turned on
and have an active internet connection, but when you will not be using it.
- Click ‘OK.'
Step 5. How to manually
run LiveUpdate:
- Open Symantec AntiVirus
by double-clicking the yellow shield icon in the taskbar near your clock or
go to ‘Start,’ select ‘Programs’ or ‘All Programs,’
select ‘Symantec Client Security’ and then ‘Symantec AntiVirus
Client.'
- Click the LiveUpdate
button in the bottom right-hand corner of the Window
- Follow the on-screen
instructions.
