How you can help

How Barracuda works

Based on a number of factors generally used in scanning for spam, Barracuda will score each message on a scale of about 0-50. Current settings are:

  • 9 and above is considered to be spam
  • 4-9 is likely to be spam
  • 0-3 is not spam
  • July 7, 2004 UPDATE: Our Barracuda's Bayesian database is beginning to take shape. However, we're being warned that we've marked many more messages as spam that weren't tagged than those that were incorrectly tagged. We need you to send us headers of messages that were tagged as spam but are not spam. Please help us in training this tool. The more we teach it, the better it will filter unwanted email.

    We are continuing our efforts to educate the Bayesian database used by the Barracuda spam firewall by identifying specific email messages that were incorrectly tagged. If you receive a message that is either:

    1. Not spam but marked as such (with "[SPAM]" appearing within the subject line)
    OR
    2. Is spam but is not marked as such

    ... please follow the instructions below.
     
    Two ways to help

    1. Share with us the results of the tagging as you see it in your inbox.
    Keep in mind that anti-spam tools have not yet been perfected: You may receive messages which are clearly spam but are not tagged; you may receive messages which are clearly not spam yet are tagged. If you see either of the above examples please follow these instructions:

    Step a. Identify a message that you think is spam that is not tagged or a message that was tagged as spam that you know is not.

    Step b. Copy the header section of the message into a new e-mail and send it to spamtest@wcu.edu.

    We only need to see the header information--not the body of the message. Simply forwarding the e-mail to the address above will not work as the complete original header will be removed and the information in the header is what we need to see at this time.


    Different e-mail applications in use on campus see the header information of a message in different ways. Unlike the complete Outlook client, there is yet no method within the Microsoft Outlook web client.

    2. Participate in an online forum. Visit http://cowee.wcu.edu/Forums/SpamBlocking (only available computers located on campus) to discuss any and all issues regarding spam.

    All opinions are welcome yet we are especially interested in comments that deal with issues such as the impact of spam on your Western experience and the Western policies on spam.
