Checking Out Items
Hunter Library materials are to be brought to the Circulation Desk to be checked out. Reserve items, materials ordered via ABC Express service, and Interlibrary Loan materials may also be picked up and checked out at the Circulation Desk.
A valid WCU ID Card or Borrower's Card must be presented for ALL materials to be checked out, including reserve items.
A student may check out materials for a faculty member by applying for a proxy card. The faculty member assumes full responsibility for the return of the materials or payment if the materials are lost or damaged.
Materials from the Media Collection are to be brought to the Circulation Desk to be checked out. Learn more about the Media Collection.

Renewals
Most materials can be renewed online. Renewals are not available by phone or email.
Most materials may be renewed three times, unless another patron has put a hold on that material.
Leisure Reading Collection books may be renewed only once.

It is the responsibility of the borrower to note the due date of an item and to return it on time. To view the list of materials checked out to you and their due dates, log in to your library account.
Courtesy notices (3 days before due date), overdue notices and statements of charges are emailed to your Westen Carolina University email address only with the subject line "Circulation Notices". Please read these notices - unpaid accounts are sent to the University One Stop Office on a regular basis and must be paid there.
Recalls
Any WCU students, faculty or staff member may recall material that is currently checked out. ALL materials, checked out by ANY patron, are subject to recall.
You may request a recall at the Circulation Desk. We will notify the current patron that this item has been recalled and it may have an earlier due date. Once it has been returned, we will send you an email notice, letting you know that the item is on the hold shelf at the Circulation Desk.
Each patron is entitled to keep an item for a minimum of 3 weeks from the original check out date, before it is eligible for recall.
EXCEPTION: Items recalled by Reserves are due back IMMEDIATELY.
If you receive a recall notice, please return the item promptly to the Circulation Desk by the due date. Recalled items CANNOT be renewed.
Lost/Damaged Items
The charge for a lost item is the replacement cost for the item plus a $20 processing fee.
If you pay for a lost item, and return it within one year of the due date, you may be eligible for a refund of the replacement cost; however, the $20 processing fee is non-refundable.
Damaged materials will be billed according to the amount and type of damage.
Privacy
What a person reads is a private matter. Hunter Library will not reveal to others who has borrowed a particular item or who is on a waiting list for an item.
Reserves
Reserve items usually check out for in-library use only, and for short periods of time, so that many people may use the same resources. Many items are now available electronically.
Printing, Photocopying and Other Services
- Lost and Found - Ask at the Circulation Desk.
- Flash Drives Available for Checkout
24 hour reserve checkout for University faculty, staff & students only. Overdue fine is $0.50 per hour.
- Study Rooms:
Study rooms on the Ground Floor are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They cannot be reserved or booked in advance.
A limited number of Faculty Studies are available. Applications may be completed at the Circulation Desk. Studies are assigned through the Library Administrative Office.
- Printing:
Hunter Library's printers use WCU’s campus-wide pay-for-print system called PAW Print. Printing costs are $0.05 per black/white page, $0.25 per color page with CatCard or cash.
If you have questions or problems with the photocopiers or printers, please ask for help at the Circulation or Reference Desks. More information on PAW Print.
- Photocopiers:
There is a coin-only photocopier in the closed Copier Room near the current newspapers and magazines on the Main Floor. Copies are $0.10 per black/white page and $0.50 per color page.
There is also a photocopier that accepts CatCard payments only. Copies on this machine are $0.05 per page. This machine can also be used to scan pages and send them to an email address free-of-charge; instructions are posted next to the machine, or you can ask for assistance with this at the Reference Desk.
- Microfilm and Microfiche Readers:
$0.05 per page with CatCard or cash.
On select readers you can scan film or fiche materials and then email the scan. Ask for assistance with this at the Reference Desk.
