Biographical and Historical Note
Hiram T. Hunter (1883-1947) was raised in Madison County, North Carolina and educated at Mars Hill College, Wake Forest College, and then at Columbia University and Harvard University. He taught for several years in public schools in North Carolina and Virgina and for four years at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He then served as Head of the Department of Education at Wake Forest College for one year before becoming president of Western Carolina Teachers College in 1923. Hunter presided over Western's transition from a two-year to a four-year institution. Western's library is named in honor of Hunter.
