Collection Development

The role of collection development at Hunter Library is to build and shape collections and to provide access to resources which primarily support the undergraduate and graduate programs of the university. In addition to selection of resources, collection development is concerned with assessment, maintenance, and deselection of materials.

The main constituents of the collection development program are: the Coordinator of Collection Development, the Collection Development Committee, subject bibliographers, and library representatives. Each department is assigned a faculty representative to the library, as well as a library bibliographer for that department. These individuals are primarily responsible for building the collection which supports the academic needs of that department. All teaching faculty members, however, are encouraged to submit order requests in their discipline so that the resulting collection will be well-balanced.

The Hunter Library Collection Development Policy exists to assist the various librarians and departmental faculty in the selection of library materials. In addition to individual subject policies for academic departments, this document contains general information regarding book order request procedures, selection and deselection guidelines, information on new course meetings, and policies for individual units in the library.
