General Education Review Proposal Approval Process

The units involved in the approval of the General Education Review Proposal will be the General Education Committee of the Council on Instruction and Curriculum, the Council on Instruction and Curriculum, and the Faculty Senate.

Members of each of these units will be strongly encouraged to participate in, and to encourage their constituents to participate in, appropriate activities in the development of the General Education Review Proposal. Input should be provided to the General Education Review Committee during the development stage, in order to minimize the amount of revision or change that might be suggested during the approval process.

The responsibility for making modifications in the Proposal as a result of suggestions that arise during the approval process will be the sole responsibility of the General Education Review Committee.

Upon completion of a Proposal, the General Education Review Committee will deliver the Proposal to the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Vice-Chancellor will review the Proposal and deliver it to the General Education Committee.

The General Education Committee may:

Upon receiving the Proposal and any suggestions for revision or change from the General Education Committee, the Council on Instruction and Curriculum may:

If the Proposal arrives at the Faculty Senate with no suggestions for revision or change, and the Faculty Senate makes no suggestions for revision or change, the Faculty Senate may approve the Proposal. If the Faculty Senate receives the Proposal with suggestions for revision or change from the Council on Instruction and Curriculum and the General Education Committee, the Faculty Senate may:

Upon completion of any revisions based on suggestions of any of the considering units, the General Education Review Committee will return the Proposal to the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and to the Faculty Senate. At this time, the Faculty Senate will consider the Proposal for acceptance or rejection. Other considering units (the General Education Committee and the Council on Instruction and Curriculum) should participate in any further approval discussion in the Faculty Senate. If further recommendations for revision or change are made, the Proposal will be returned to the General Education Review Committee, who will consider such revisions or changes. The Proposal will then be returned to the Vice Chancellor and to the Faculty Senate for final approval. Upon approval of the Proposal by the Faculty Senate, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs will recommend to the Chancellor that the General Education Review Proposal be adopted as the General Education Program for Western Carolina University.

The Proposal may be submitted for this approval process in whole or in parts at the discretion of the General Education Review Committee and the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Any part submitted separately from the whole Proposal will be considered by the same mechanism described above.
