General Education Review Committee

Minutes of November 12, 1997 Meeting

Curtis reported that there is funding for three people to attend the General Education conference in Tampa in February; those interested should contact Curtis for details. Also, there will be a General Education Faculty meeting in February, and Fred Hinson has invited Curtis to report to the general education faculty on the work of the review committee.

The next committee meeting will be the long meeting planned for Monday evening, November 17 at 5:30 in the Library conference room (next to the Faculty Center). Curtis will check on the possibility of coffee and soft drinks, and it will be okay to bring a sandwich or whatever for dinner. It was agreed that a member of each of the sub-groups will make a brief (five minute) presentation of each group’s model, and then we will spend the bulk of the meeting hammering out a model or models to present to the faculty. We would anticipate another forum or some kind of open faculty interaction opportunity early next semester to present and receive feedback on the results of this model building.

The other topic for this meeting was to consider the summarized feedback from the October Forum about the Fundamental Principles. There was sentiment that the student sense of place should be broadened to embrace the student’s place in the larger world. This is mentioned in the preface to the principles, but might need to be reworked into the Sense of Place principle. There was considerable sentiment that lifelong wellness needs to be incorporated into the principles explicitly. The Faculty Commitment principle received attention as being different from the other principles. Concerns about assessing this principle, whether it should be a "given", and the absence of a clear statement about administrative commitment were voiced. These concerns may be addressed when a more specific model is presented, but the committee may want to revisit the principles and do some revision after the model question has been addressed.

The question of publishing the Forum feedback summary was addressed. Curtis will draft a memo to the University community about the summary, and the summary itself will be placed on the Web page. The summary is too lengthy a text to print and mail or to email individually to members of the University community.

The next meeting will be on Monday, November 17 at 5:30 pm in the Library Conference room. It is anticipated that this meeting will be lengthy, on the order of three hours.

 Respectfully submitted,

Nory Prochaska, recording secretary
