FRAGILE EARTH: Reflections on the Environment

Features over 60 works of art in a variety of media reflecting the artists’
creative response to the beauty and the vulnerability of the environment.
Forty artists from eight counties in Western North Carolina (Cherokee, Clay,
Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Swain, Macon, Transylvania & Qualla Boundary are
featured. “The Fragile Earth exhibit features some of the most innovative
and creative expression by artists from throughout our mountain
communities,” DeWitt said. “We’re looking for unique self expression,
perhaps inspired by tradition, as well as experimental works of high
artistic merit.”

LEWIS BUCK: Beyond the Surface - Life Works in Painting and Assemblage
Reception: Saturday, September 6th, 2-4PM
 
The exhibition is a career retrospective of the poetic works of art of Lewis
Buck, Black Mountain, North Carolina and includes fifty paintings and
collages representing Buck's prolific career spanning 60 years. Purely
lyrical, vibrant colors, textural zones and found objects make up
Lewis Buck's creative genius inspired by a lifetime of
observation and the spontaneity of life itself. Lewis and his wife,
printmaker Porge Buck, have been advocates of the Asheville regional
artistic community for 25 years.

In 1985, while on a magazine assignment to document the experience and
phenomenon of love, photographer Donna Ferrato witnessed a man beat his
wife. Her response was to initiate a domestic abuse project, traveling
across the country in an effort to see and document first-hand the scope of
the acts of violence. Ferrato would later feature the photographs she took
in her book, Living with the Enemy. The exhibition is organized by the
Domestic Abuse Awareness, Inc., New York, a non-profit organization
committed to exposing and eradicating violence against women and children
through awareness, education, and action. The exhibition here is
co-sponsored by REACH of Jackson County and Friends of the Museum.

The exhibit features the creative research and studio art production from
graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts students. Following a comprehensive course
of reach and studio production, students present a portfolio exhibit as a
preface to their forthcoming careers as professional studio artists and in
creative industries.

Renowned ceramic artist James Tanner will be featured with his abstract mask
like ceramic forms often inspired from Tanner¹s African American heritage
Tanner experiments with color, and sometimes applies glaze in drips that
echo Jackson Pollock. Tanner is professor emeritus of ceramics at Minnesota
State University, where he taught for 35 years. His work is in collections
including those of the Smithsonian Institution and the African American
Museum in Dallas. Tanner will be an artist in residence at Western¹s School
of Art and Design in February.
Inspired Design - Jacquard and Entrepreneurial Textiles

“Inspired Design: Jacquard & Entrepreneurial Textiles,” an exhibition of
both national and international leading artists of innovative textile
design, including a variety of computer designed textile applications. This
exhibit features designs and work that represent five 21st Century design
growth areas of creative/innovative textiles and digital technologies.
Organized by the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design, Kellogg Center,
Asheville. CCCD is a University of North Carolina interagency partner with
Western Carolina University.

This series of 40 photographs features personal artifacts, saved to remember deceased loved ones – such as a wooden shoetree, a cast-iron skillet, the veins of a scapula and a woven dog collar.
