Admissions Scholarships – Merit & Need Based

Pilar Apodaca Scholarship.  This fund was established to provide a scholarship with preference to Hispanic American students. To be eligible the student must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A..

Mr. and Mrs. John W. Ashe Scholarship.  This fund was established by a bequest from the estate of Beulah Ashe Ensley in honor and memory of her parents. Awards are for students from Jackson or Haywood counties who demonstrate financial need.

Scott and Shirley M. Border Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for academically deserving students who are in good standing. Preference will be given to candidates who graduated from a Haywood County, NC high school or community college and who have declared interest in pursuing a course study in the College of Business. Candidates shall be considered on the basis of their academic merit.

The Deborah J. Bardo Employee Scholarship Fund.  The purpose of this fund shall be to provide support for entering Western Carolina University students who have proven themselves to be academically deserving. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit and need to entering students who are children or grandchildren of current University employees.  Click here for the required application.

The Thomas W. Bird Scholarship Fund.  Established by a bequest from the estate of Thomas W. Bird, this fund supports needy and deserving students.

Bruce Blankenship Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship program provides financial support for students pursuing a college education while working full-time. Priority consideration is given to students studying psychology, social work, business administration, or curricula in the Department of Human Services.

The Nicholas and Grady Justice Bonarrigo Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund provides financial support to students who have graduated from a Western North Carolina high school (Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Cherokee, Swain, Henderson, Transylvania, Graham, or Madison). Candidates will be considered on the basis of financial need, academic qualifications, and overall achievements.

Robert A. "Art" Byrd Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund was established through the generosity of the friends and family of Robert A. "Art" Byrd in his memory. The scholarship provides financial support for students who graduated from a McDowell County public high school and whose current permanent residence is in McDowell County, North Carolina.

The Dr. Fred R. and Berniece H. Cain Scholarship Fund.   Dr. Fred R. and Berniece H. Cain created this scholarship to assist students in obtaining a degree from Western Carolina University. Preference is given to Macon County residents.

Ed and Nell Caldwell. Paul and Cecelia Caldwell have established this fund in honor of Paul's parents, Ed and Nell Caldwell to help disadvantaged students in Western North Carolina obtain their college education.

The Catawba County Christian Business and Professional Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund provides financial support for entering freshmen. Preference will be given to a student from Catawba County, NC, with first preference given to candidates from Hickory High School and St. Stephens High School. Though no student is excluded from consideration of this award regardless of faith, candidates shall be considered based on their demonstration of the highest standards of moral character, including those exemplified by traditional Christian principles. Katherine Causey Award.  This award provides financial support for women who graduated from high schools in Alamance, Guilford, and Randolph Counties or counties west of the above-named counties in North Carolina and who are majoring in biology or English.

The Cullowhee High School Alumni Scholarship Fund. This fund was established by alumni of Cullowhee High School to assist former students or relatives of former students, faculty, and staff of Cullowhee High in attending Western Carolina University. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and be approved by the Cullowhee High School scholarship committee. For the required application click here.

Homer Ray Davis Scholarship.  This scholarship was established to honor Homer Ray Davis, the son of Sue Morgan Davis of Jackson County. It provides scholarship assistance on a need basis to students from Jackson, Swain, and Macon Counties.

Craig and Denise Dubow.This fund providse scholarship support for deserving students at Western Carolina University. This scholarship provides support for full time undergraduate students from Jackson, Macon, and Transylvania counties who demonstrate financial need and maintain a B average. The Gannett Foundation has contributed to this fund.

C. Cole Edmonds Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for a deserving incoming or returning student. The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated community service with emphasis upon environmental and humanitarian service including but not limited to military service. Preference shall be given to applicants from western North Carolina.

Winston A. Felts Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships honoring Winston Felts are awarded to students from Mitchell County who are majoring in music or teacher education on the basis of academic achievement, overall civic and social activities and contributions, and financial need.

Ulysses H. Ferguson Family Scholarships.  This endowment honors the memory of Edna Ferguson Rogers, an outstanding, dedicated teacher. It supports awards for students from Haywood County on the basis of financial need.

Mary Woods Flintom Scholarships.  This endowment, honoring a former staff member, provides scholarships on the basis of overall social, civic, and academic achievement and potential, as well as financial need.

Mildred Miller Fort Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for deserving students who are in good standing. Preference will be given to candidates who graduated from a high school in one of the 22 westernmost NC counties, be in the top 30% of their graduating class, and have a positive attitude and potential to make a contribution to their communities.

The Henry Galloway Scholarship.  To provide support to students majoring in undergraduate education programs and have graduated from a western North Carolina high school (Burke County and west).

Gerri Wright Garrett Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for academically deserving students who are in good standing.  The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit to students who have earned at least a 3.4 GPA.  This scholarship is for students who are North Carolina residents.

Gaston-Lincoln Alumni Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for deserving full-time students who are in good standing with the university. Preference will be given to recipients who graduated from high school in either Gaston or Lincoln Counties, NC. Preference will be given to alternating the home counties of award recipients. The Sam Gibson Scholarship.  This renewable scholarship, established by Charles Yandell, a close personal friend of Sam Gibson, provides support for education students attending Western Carolina University. Selection is based on the combination of financial need, academic qualifications, and overall achievements.

L. Milton Hauser Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Elementary or Middle Grades Education, with a demonstrated financial need. The scholarship amount varies (up to $500) per academic year.

Linda Jones Hudson Gilbert Scholarship.  This scholarship assists students from Western North Carolina in obtaining a degree in education. Selection will be based on demonstrated financial need. Preference will be shown to first generation college students.

The William Wilson "Pop" and Nancy Goodson Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship was established to honor  "Pop"  and Nancy Goodson. They were both educators in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. This scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students majoring in education. Candidates will be considered on the basis of academic qualifications and achievements.

The Beverly D. Hairfield, Jr. Scholarship.  To provide support to a deserving student(s) who graduated from a high school in Avery, Burke, Caldwell or McDowell Counties, NC.

Haywood County Western Alumni Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships are awarded to Pisgah and Tuscola High School graduates as recommended by high school counselors on the basis of financial need.

Adah C. and Horatio Helder Scholarship.  This scholarship was established to provide financial  assistance to worthy students who are residents of Haywood County, NC.

The Lester C. Henderson Scholarship.  To provide support to full-time WCU student who graduated from Macon, Clay, or Cherokee county high schools and are in need of financial assistance.

Dillard Hooper Scholarship.  Established through a bequest from the estate of Louise Hooper, this scholarship will be awarded annually on the basis of financial need to students who are native to Jackson County and attend Western Carolina University.  Click here for the required application.

The H. T. and Glen Weaver Hunter Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund was established through the generosity of Miss Marthlou Hunter, a 1930 graduate of Western. Ms. Hunter's father, Hiram T. Hunter, was president of Western from 1920 until his death in 1946. Preference is given to entering freshmen on the basis of financial need, and renewals depend upon satisfactory progress.

Wallace Hyde Scholarship Fund.  Established by Mrs. Jeanette Hyde in honor of her husband, this scholarship fund provides financial assistance to qualified and deserving high school graduates residing in Graham County or surrounding counties.

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship.  To provide support to a student who graduated from a Jackson County, NC, high school, preferably, and who is affiliated (a member or immediate family member) with the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.  Click here for the required application.

Jackson County Western Alumni Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund was established by the alumni and friends of Western Carolina University in Jackson County to provide financial support for deserving young Jackson County students in baccalaureate degree programs at Western. Scholarship recipients are selected from Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain High Schools on the basis of financial need and other criteria.

Leger Family.  This scholarship fund is established and funded by the family of the late John Alfred Leger of Rutherford College, NC, to provide support for deserving Western Carolina Students who are intending to major in either nursing or teacher education baccalaureate degree program.

James A. and Mary A. Legette Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for deserving students attending Western Carolina University. Candidates must be full-time students and shall be considered on the basis of their academic and overall qualifications.

John Sam and Zonell McPhail Lay Endowment.  Established by the John Sam Lay Trust, this scholarship provides financial support for students from South Carolina who are attending Western Carolina University.

Thurman J. Leatherwood Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for incoming freshmen who have proven themselves academically deserving. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and will be given to students from North Carolina.

The Charles O. Frazier Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund provides financial support to an incoming freshman enrolled in a full-time degree-seeking course of study. Preference will be given to a graduate of Franklin High School, Franklin, NC, who has demonstrated financial need. 

Tara Lackey Technology Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for deserving full-time students. Awards will be made to entering freshmen who are in need of computer/technology resources required by the University that are not otherwise available through the student's own resources including other scholarship awards.

Ernest C. McCracken Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships provide awards based on financial need and overall social, civic, and academic achievement and potential.

Joan and Malcolm MacNeill Merit Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for full-time, degree seeking undergraduate students. Candidates must be in good standing and will be considered on the basis of their overall academic merit.

Belinda Morse.  This scholarship was established in 1997 by Belinda Morse, a graduate of Western Carolina University, to provide support for first-generation college students from North Carolina.

The Mountaineer/Josephus Daniels Scholarship Award.  Established by the Josephus Daniels Charitable Foundation for students from the primary circulation area of the Enterprise Mountaineer newspaper.  Eligibility is based upon academic record, potential for continued achievement, successful participation in school-sponsored activities, leadership ability and potential, social and civic contributions, and need.

Clyde M. Norton Scholarships.  This endowment, established by the Norton family, honors the memory of Clyde Norton, an outstanding leader in business and public affairs in Western North Carolina. The fund provides support for students from McDowell County.

F. F. Pollard Endowment Scholarship Fund.  The purpose of this Fund shall be to provide one full tuition and fees scholarship for an incoming or returning academically deserving student. The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit with preference given to those meritorious students demonstrating financial need.

The Brank and Juanita Farmer Proffitt Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship was established by Mrs. Juanita Proffitt in honor of her husband, Dr. Brank Proffitt, to assist students originally from Madison County with their efforts to obtain a degree from Western Carolina University.

Linda Rader Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for academically deserving students who are in good standing. Preference will be given to undergraduate students.

The Leone Hyde Ray Scholarship.  The family of Leone Hyde Ray established this endowed fund to provide scholarship support for education students attending Western Carolina University. This scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating high school senior from Graham County who has an interest in becoming a classroom teacher.

The Bobby S. and Anne B. Robinson Scholarship Fund.  Established through the generosity of the I.L. Long Construction Company in Winston-Salem, this scholarship is to provide support for incoming freshmen from McDowell County or Swain County High Schools who demonstrate financial need.

Jake A. Rusher Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for needy and deserving students to attend Western Carolina University.

The Sandlin-Morris Scholarship.  This endowed fund provides scholarship support for students from Haywood, Jackson, or Swain counties. Selection will be based on a combination of financial need, academic qualifications, and overall achievements.

The Willie Lou and Jessie Burton Shields Scholarship Fund .  Emma Jean Shields Bradley, Dorothy Shields Griffin and Howard Shields have established and endowed fund in honor of their parents to provide scholarship support for deserving students at Western Carolina University. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students from Cherokee County North Carolina in their efforts to obtain a degree from WCU.

Lewis J. Smith Scholarship Fund.  These endowed scholarships, which honor Lewis J. Smith, a founder of the Cullowhee School and the first chairman of the board of trustees of Cullowhee School, are awarded to students majoring in history or education on the basis of financial need and other criteria.

C.D. Spangler Jr. Scholarship for Minority Students.  This endowed scholarship program's purpose is to provide financial support for deserving young minority students. Awards are based upon high academic achievement, successful participation in various school activities, overall social and civic contributions, and financial need.

The Elizabeth Thompson Scholarship.  Established by Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson, this renewable scholarship is designated to assist education majors in attending Western Carolina University.

The Curtis L. and Brenda C. Wellmon Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship, established by the Wellmon Family, provides support to graduates of East Burke High School in Icard, North Carolina, who demonstrate financial need.

Fanny Green Yost Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for students majoring in one of the undergraduate elementary education degree programs. Candidates must have graduated from a Jackson County high school. They will be considered on the basis of financial need, academic performance, and commuter status. Preference will be given to upperclassmen who are currently working in the classroom. back to top

Office of Financial Aid Scholarships – Merit & Need Based

Nell M. Leatherwood Scholarships.  This endowment provides scholarships, renewable for four years, to help deserving students of Swain County. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors.

Dr. A. P. and Frances Dickson Scholarships.  A scholarship is awarded annually to a fulltime undergraduate student who currently resides in Hoke County, North Carolina. Recipients are chosen by the financial aid office on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

R. Kirk Landon Graduate Student Scholarship.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for full-time, degree seeking students in a Masters Degree program. Preference will be given to qualified students from Haywood County, NC.

James Lee Love Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time North Carolina resident undergraduate student. Recipients are chosen by the financial aid office on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Lawrence and Geneva Ramsey Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in 1998 by Mylie Ramsey in memory of Lawrence and Geneva Ramsey. It provides support for Jackson County students who are rising Western Carolina University juniors.

Paul A. Reid and Paul A. Reid Surry County Scholarships.  Grants are available to graduates of Surry County high schools to attend Western Carolina University either as undergraduate or graduate students. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors.

The St. David's Award.  Established by Carl Richard Hill and the vestry of Saint David's Episcopal Church of Cullowhee, this fund provides financial support to deserving young people who have earned an associate degree at Southwestern Community College and who desire to pursue a baccalaureate degree program at Western Carolina University.

C.M. and M.D. Suther Scholarships.  These nonrenewable scholarships are awarded annually to North Carolina resident undergraduate students on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Robert Varner Family Scholarship.  This endowment fund supports scholarship for students from Swain County, NC.

College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships

Helen Ramsey Brown Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for two rising seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences - one in the area of humanities and one in the area of natural sciences. The recipients will be selected from the rising senior class on the basis of academic excellence and promise of success in their chosen field. Contact the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Glaxo SmithKline Women in Science Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for full-time female students at WCU. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize outstanding scholarship, to provide an incentive for female science students to enter the science professions, and provide students with a female scientist mentor at Glaxo SmithKline. Contact the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Bitha Jackson Grimes Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for a full-time junior or senior unergraduate student who has committed to the pre-med program. Candidates will be considered and recommended by the pre-professional program advisor. Preference will be given to candidates who have graduated from a high school in one of the 11 westernmost North Carolina counties, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have validated financial need.

Jessie Siler Sloan and George Neville Sloan Scholarship.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for juniors in the College of Arts and Sciences based on academic achievement and financial need. Preference is given to residents of Macon County, North Carolina. Contact the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Bob Zahner Endowed Fund in Environmental Sciences. This scholarship provides financial support for students showing potential and promise in the area of environmental sciences. The primary purpose is to support scholarly activities of Western Carolina University students at the Highlands Biological Station.

Department of English

The Kim L. Brown Award for Excellence in Tutoring. To provide support to a student(s) selected by the Director of the Writing and Learning Commons in consultaion with the Chairman, Department of English.

Crum Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship fund was established in honor of Joseph and Mabel Crum, former members of the Western Carolina University faculty. The fund provides support for undergraduate Mathematics majors and English majors. Contact the appropriate department.

The Danielle "Dani" West Morgan Endowed Scholarship Fund. This scholarship provides financial support for students majoring in English and Criminal Justice. Recipients of this scholarship will be identified in alternating years by the English Department and Criminal Justice Department Scholarship Committees. Preference will be given to students with financial need who are in their junior or senior year and have outstanding moral integrity and a strong commitment to service.

Ashby Wade Award in Freshman Composition. This award is presented annually to the freshman whose ability and promise as a writer have been attested to by his or her compositions in English 101 and 102. Contact the Head of the English Department.

Steve and Valerie Yurkovich Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support to an undergraduate student with a declared major in either Geology or Science Education with a concentration in Earth Sciences. Contact the Geology Program faculty.

Department of History Scholarships

Lucy M. and Jean C. Brown Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support to a student with a declared major in history. The prospective recipient shall be an accepted student or current student in good standing. Preference will be given to students from Henderson, Buncombe, Madison, Transylvania, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, Clay, Graham, or Cherokee counties in North Carolina. Solon H and Mary Conn Bryan.  Established in 1982 by T. Conn  Bryan and Virginia Bryan Schreiber in memory of their parents Solon H. and Mary Conn Bryan. Dr. Conn Bryan was a member of the WCU History faculty.

Billy and Ruth Hice Scholarships.  Established in memory of Billy and Ruth Hice, this scholarship fund supports students who are pursuing a degree in history. Contact the head of the history department.

The History Department Academic Excellence.  Established by the faculty in the Department of History, these scholarship awards are for students planning to pursue a major in history. Consideration for scholarship will be based on merit. Contact the history department.

Alice Mathews Scholarship Fund.  This endowed scholarship fund was established to honor a former member of the WCU faculty, Dr. Alice Mathews. The fund provides support for deserving history majors with priority consideration given to students with a 4.0 GPA. Contact the history department.

The Lucy Ann Nordyke Fellowship Fund.  This scholarship was established by Martha Jean Rice in memory of her grandmother, Lucy Ann Nordyke, who was born in 1861 in the Cherokee Nation West. Scholarship support is provided for students pursuing a master's degree in history and performing research in Cherokee Indian Studies. First priority is given to Cherokee Indians and Cherokee descendants. Contact the head of the history department.

The Sarah J. and Max R. Williams Scholarship.  To provide support to students majoring in history. Preference will be given to graduate students. Contact the Head of the Department.

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Scholarships

George A. Milton Scholarship.  Awarded to undergraduate students majoring in Mathematics or Mathematics Education. Applicants must have scored at least a 550 on the mathematics portion of the SAT or an equivalent score on a comparable test and maintained at least a “B” average in all high school mathematics courses. Contact the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Proffitt's Pecuniary Propitiousness Protocol.  The purpose of this fund is to recognize and assist those majoring in Computer Science who have shown themselves academically worthy and have proven themselves deserving. Contact Mark Holliday at holliday@email.wcu.edu.

Crum Scholarship Fund.  This endowed scholarship fund was established in honor of Joseph and Mabel Crum, former members of the Western Carolina University faculty. The fund provides support for undergraduate Mathematics majors and English majors. Contact the appropriate department.

Political Science Scholarships

Chan Carpenter Scholarship. Named after longtime political science professor and former department head, Dr. Chan Carpenter, the Chan Carpenter Scholarship is available to students with an interest in attending law school. The department will award one $500 scholarship. This scholarship can help pay tuition or defray the costs associated with preparing for and applying to law school. For more information, please contact the Political Science Department Head.

C. Don Livingston Scholarship. Named after political science professor and former department head, Dr. Don Livingston, the C. Don Livingston Scholarship is available to students with an interest in American politics. The department will award one scholarship of $500. This scholarship can be used to help pay tuition or cover internship related expenses. For more information, please contact the Political Science Department Head.

Charles Stevens Scholarship. Named after longtime political science professor and former department head, Dr. Charles Stevens, the Charles Stevens Scholarship is available to support students interested in international relations. The department will award one $500 scholarship. The scholarship can help cover tuition or study abroad related expenses. Preference for this scholarship will be given to students who plan to study abroad. For more information, please contact the Political Science Department Head.

Department of Psychology Scholarships

The Linda Elaine Glenn Scholarship. This scholarship is in memory of Linda Elaine Glen, who was a Psychology major at WCU at the time of her death. The scholarship recognizes a female undergraduate majoring in Psychology, and the recipient is selected by the Alpha Phi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Department of Health and Human Performance

The Otto Spilker Scholarship. Establised by friends and colleagues of Otto Spilker. Awarded each year to a graduate student in the Department of Health and Human Performance. The recipient must be a full-time degree candidate in a graduate program in Health and Human Performance. Application may be picked up in the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee. The deadline to apply is December 1st of each year. Contact the head of the Department of Health and Human Performance.

Sports Management Student Professional  Association Scholarship. Awarded annually to a currently enrolled Sports Management major who is dedicated to the field and active in the association. A GPA of 2.7 is required to maintain the scholarship.

School of Art and Design Scholarships

Roberta Buckner Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for a junior or senior showing potential and promise with a declared major in interior design. Preference will be given to students with financial need and who demonstrate creative excellence.

Wilma Cosper Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for deserving students who have declared a major in interior design and in one of the academic programs in Human Environmental Sciences and have resided in North Carolina for a minimum of three years, graduated from a NC high school, and their current permanent residence is NC. Students will be chosen based on academic achievement and potential, successful participation in various school activities, overall social and community contributions, financial worthiness

The Lorraine Kronholm Stone Scholarship. This memorial fund was established to provide scholarshipsupport primarily for "non-traditional" students majoring in studio art or art education. Contact the director of the school.

Diane Withrow Coyle Art Fund. This fund provides financial support for the purchase of the best drawing in the WCU student art show. Contact the School of Art and Design.

  College of Health and Human Sciences Scholarships

Cheshire Center Scolarship. This annual scholarship provides financial support for a deserving graduate student in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program who demonstrate the potential for success with the program and department. Preference shall first be given to those graduate students with demonstrated academic success. Preference shall secondarily be given to those with financial need.  Constact the WCU Communication Sciences and Disorders Department.

Norma Brake Cook Scholarship. This scholarship was established in honor of Norma Brake Cook who served as a Clinical Lab Sciences professor. The scholarship will be directed to deserving students participating in the Emergency Medical Care (EMC) program. Contact the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Barbara Cosper Scholarship. This annual scholarship provides financial support for deserving students who have declared a major in nutrition and dietetics. Contact the Program Director of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Wilma Cosper Scholarship.  This scholarship program provides financial support for deserving students who have declared a major in one of the academic programs in the Human Environmental Sciences and interior design and in one of the academic programs in Human Environmental Sciences and have resided in North Carolina for a minimum of three years, graduated from a NC high school, and their current permanent residence is NC. Students will be chosen based on academic achievement and potential, successful participation in various school activities, overall social and community contributions, financial worthiness. Michele Lynn Clayton Hall Scholarship. This annual scholarship provides financial support for students from western North Carolina (Charlotte west) in obtaining a degree in Criminology from Western Carolina University. Candidates must be a junior or senior and must maintain a 3.0 GPA.  

Jackson Paper Company Scholarship. Jackson Paper Company established two scholarships in 1998. These scholarships are to provide support for students majoring in the Environmental Health program and students majoring in the Industrial Distribution program. Preference is given to students who are residents of Western North Carolina.

The Danielle "Dani" West Morgan Endowed Scholarship Fund. This scholarship provides financial support for the students majoring in English and Criminal Justice. Recipients of this scholarship will be identified in alternating years by the English Department and Criminal Justice Department Scholarhip Committees. Preference will be given to students with financial need who are in their junior or senior year and have outstanding moral integrity and a strong commitment to service. 

Yvonne Saddler Nielsen Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for a deserving graduate student in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program.  The WCU Communication Sciences and Disorder faculty will recommend a candidate to the University Scholarship Committee.  The candidate will be entering the second year of graduate study.  Contact the Department of WCU Communication Sciences and Disorders.  

Martha Cabe Queen Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for students in obtaining a degree in Social Work from Western Carolina University.  The recipient must be a full-time junior or senior, must be and remain in good academic standing, and must be a graduate of a western North Carolina high school.

Department of Athletics Scholarships

The Ronnie G. Childress Memorial Scholarship Fund.  This fund, established to support scholarships in baseball, honors the memory of Ronnie Childress. Ronnie, a 1970 WCU graduate, worked as a radio announcer at the family-owned radio station in Sylva. Contact the director of athletics.

Walter Durr Scholarship.  This scholarship provides support for a member of the intercollegiate football team.  Contact the Head Football Coach.

Suzi Gardner Women's Track Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for a member of the WCU women's track team. Contact the Department of Athletics.

Gender Equity in Athletics.  This fund provides financial support in promoting gender equity in intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina University.  Contact the Department of Athletics.

Brydon S. Greene Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support for a member of the WCU golf team. Contact the Department of Athletics.

The Odell Griffin Memorial.  To provide support to an outstanding pitcher on the Catamount baseball team. Contact the Department of Athletics.

Terry M. Helms Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for deserving full-time student athletes in good standing at Western Carolina University.  The recipient must be a member of the men's or women's track or cross country teams  and must be a cross country and/or distance runner of at least 3,000 meters.  Contact the Track/Cross Country Coach.

Dale and Dianne Hollifield Clevelend County Football Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for students who graduated from a Cleveland County, NC high school and are members of the WCU intercollegiate football team.  Contact the Head Football Coach.

Dale and Dianne Hollifield Football Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for deserving student athletes to attend and participate on the intercollegiate football team through the walk-on process at Western Carolina University.  The walk-on process includes student athletes who have not been offered scholarship assistance through traditional early acceptance, sign-on procedures.  Contact the Head Football Coach.

Wallace Hyde Endowment for Athletes.  The scholarship provides financial support for a member of the intercollegiate football team.  Contact the Head Football Coach.

The Dee Ann Jagger Memorial Scholarship.  To provide support for members of the women's varsity tennis team. Selection will be based on academic achievement, talent, potential and overall participation in social, civic, and school activities. Preference will be given to upper-class students who have maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or above and have expressed a desire to attend graduate school. Contact the WCU Tennis Coach.

Malcolm Loughlin Endowed Soccer Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for deserving sophomore, junior, or senior student-athletes in the intercollegiate soccer program.  The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of classification, grade point average, team letter winner, absence of team, university and NCAA violations, exemplification of a model student-athlete and demonstration of unwavering commitment to personal improvement and the soccer program. The Betty Peele Leadership Fund.  To provide support to a female athlete who shows leadership on and off the court or field of play, and, who demonstrates excellence in and out of the classroom. Contact the Senior Women's athletic Administrator of the WCU Athletic Department.

Ted Phillips Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for an academically deserving member of the Catamount intercollegiate football team who has completed his sophomore year with a 2.75 GPA, is in good standing with the Department of Athletics and the University, and is seeking a degree in construction management or related discipline.  Preference will be given to construction management majors.  Contact the WCU Athletic Department and the Dean of the Kimmel School.

Pust Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for a member of the WCU baseball team.  Contact the Department of Athletics.

Marty Ramsey Summer School Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for deserving full-time student athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics and who are in good academic standing. Contact the Director of Athletics.

Robert G. Ray Basketball Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for full-time undergraduate students who are members of the intercollegiate men's basketball team.  Preference will be given to candidates who graduated from a high school in one of the 18 westernmost NC counties.  Contact the Head Men's Basketball Coach.

Charles B. Ross Jr. Golf Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in loving memory of Charles B. Ross Jr. Candidates must be contributing members of the intercollegiate golf teams and shall be considered on the basis of their integrity, financial need and academic qualifications. Contact the Athletics Department.

Charles W. Schrader Soccer Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support  for student athletes who are on the Western Carolina University soccer team.  The award will be made to a returning student in good standing, a student that exemplifies the ideals/character of a model student athlete, a team letter winner, and demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the betterment of themselves and the soccer program.  Contact the Head Soccer Coach.  

The Thomas L. "Bromo" Selzer Football Scholarship Fund. Contact the Head Football Coach.

Bobby N. Setzer Football Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for student athletes who are in good academic standing and play on the Western Carolina University intercollegiate football team.  Preference will be given to students with a declared major of Engineering Technology.  Contact the Head Football Coach.

Elizabeth Teasley Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for female student athletes who are in good academic standing and play on any of the Western Carolina University women's athletic teams. Preference will be given either to undergraduate or graduate students with a declared major of social work. Contact the Department of Athletics.  

Kirby Toney Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for a deserving student athlete from McDowell County to attend Western Carolina University.  Preference  will be given to a student athlete who is in good standing and wishes to play on the intercollegiate football team.  Contact the Head Football Coach.

The Sue and Jack Wakeley Scholar-Athlete Award for Track, Field and Cross Country.  To provide support to a female and male athlete performing in track, field or cross country. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must have scored points in a Conference meet, or, in the most important meet of the year, should there be no Conference meets. Contact the Athletics Department.

The Bob Waters Leadership Fund.  To provide support for a graduate assistantship in football. Contact the Head Football Coach.

Kathy and Chuck Wooten Cheerleading Scholarship.  This annual scholarship provides financial support for a full time undergraduate student who is in good standing with Western Carolina University and is a member of the Western Carolina University varsity Cheerleading Team.

International Students Scholarships

Office of Disability Services

Albert Dudley Brewer Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships, supported by the Adelaide Louise Brewer Fund, provide assistance for students with impaired hearing. Contact the Office of Disability Services.

 

Gracie and David H. Brown Sr. Scholarships.  This endowment honors a former superintendent of Jackson County Schools and his wife, a Cullowhee community leader. Preference given to students with impaired vision. Contact the Office of Disability Services.

Human Resources

The Staff Senate Scholarship Fund. The Staff Senate Scholarship Fund was established by the Western Carolina University Staff Senate to provide scholarship support for the children of SPA and EPA Non-Faculty employees.

WCU Family Scholarship Fund. This scholarship provides financial support for current employees of WCU, their child dependents, and their legal spouse. Qualified applicants meeting current WCU admissions criteria and admitted to the university as degree-seeking students will be eligible for the award. Other Private Scholarships through the University

C. Joseph Carter Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support  for students with academic merit or need and who are in good academic standing.  Preference will be given to the children of employees of the Division of Administration and Finance to include children or contractual employee.  Contact the Division of Administration and Finance.

Catamount Peak Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for an incoming or returning academically eligible student who is a resident in good standing at Catamount Peak.  The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of financial need with preference given to those students demonstrating academic merit.  Click here for the required application.

The Christopher Thomas Cash Scholarship Fund.  This memorial fund was established to award scholarships to nursing majors at Western Carolina University. Contact the Nursing Department.

Cullowhee School District Award.  This award program provides funds for graduates of the Cullowhee school district who desire to attend WCU. Selection is based on achievement, participation in various school activities, overall social and civic contributions, and financial need.

The Delta Sigma Phi Alumni Scholarship.  To provide support for a current brother of the Delta Omicron Chapter who is in good standing. An application must be presented to the Delta Sigma Phi Scholarship Committee prior to the academic year of the award.

Marshall Hyde Scholarships.  These scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students from Graham County who have expressed an interest in horticulture, forestry, or environmental improvement. Contact the Graham County school superintendent.

McClure Scholarship Fund. Students from Western North Carolina are invited to apply for scholarship funds for their Freshman year. You must reside in one of the following counties: Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, Caldwell, Avery, Burke, Mitchell, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Transylvania, Buncombe, Yancey, Madison, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, Graham, Clay, and Cherokee. Students must be admitted to WCU, have need based on FAFSA, academic promise and personal character. Application must be turned in to the Financial Aid office by June 15. The Raymond Edward Nelson Lambda Chi Alpha Scholarship Fund.  This fund provides scholarship support for deserving young brothers of the Lambda Chi Alpha, Beta Zeta Chapter of Western Carolina University. Brothers are selected for high academic achievement, participation in various school activities, and overall social and civic contribution. Contact the fraternity for information.

J.W. and Patricia Palmer Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships are awarded annually to students selected on the basis of academic achievement, civic and social activities, and leadership potential. Preference is given to residents of Clay County. Contact high school counselor.

Pi Kappa Alpha/Robert L. Waters Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship program is a memorial to Robert L. Waters for his outstanding leadership at Western Carolina University and in the Zeta Xi Chapter, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated social and civic contributions, and financial need. Contact the fraternity scholarship committee.

The Richard Thomas Ruhlman/Sigma Nu Fraternity Scholarship Fund.  This endowed fund was established in memory of Richard Thomas Ruhlman, a former student at Western Carolina University. The purpose of the scholarship fund is to provide financial support to a qualified and deserving brother of the Sigma Nu Chapter at Western Carolina University. State Employees' Association of North Carolina Scholarships. State employees, their spouses, and their children who have financial need and demonstrate academic potential are eligible for these awards. Students are nominated by their High School.

Doug Shirley Scholarship.  This fund has been established in memory of Doug Shirley who was a dedicated member of the Zeta Omicron Chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. This fund is designed to assist fellow "Tekes", their sons and grandsons. Students must demonstrate community and civic involvement and financial need. Contact the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

WCU Alumni Association Scholarship. Introduced in 2001, under the association's then president-elect Laura Leatherwood, the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund provides support for children or grandchildren of alumni currently attending WCU.

Baxter Wood Family, Kappa Alpha Order, Delta Alpha Alumni Association Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for students enrolled full time and in good academic standing with Western Carolina University.  The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and/or financial need.  Preference shall be given to applicants who are current brothers of Delta Alpha Chapter, Kappa Alpha Order.  Children or grandchildren of Kappa Alpha Order, Delta Alpha Alumni may also be considered. 

ZO TKE Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship provides financial support for fellow Tau Kappa Epsilon members, their descendants and other deserving students as determined by the ZOCC Scholarship Committee and affirmed by the University Scholarship Committee.  The recipient must demonstrate community and civic involvement and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
