From the Dean’s Office:

 

Welcome to our new faculty.  This fall we welcome nine full-time faculty members to our ranks in the College of Business.  We are delighted to have been able to add these quality faculty members this fall.

 

  • Cynthia Deale joins us from University of Memphis as an Associate Professor on the Hospitality and Tourism faculty.  She will also be serving as program coordinator for the Hospitality and Tourism program which is located within the Management and International Business department.

 

  • James Taylor joins us from the University of Southern Mississippi as an Assistant Professor in Hospitality and Tourism.  Jim will be defending his doctoral dissertation in a couple weeks.

 

  • Jane Sullivan joins us on a full-time basis this fall for the 2005-06 academic year.  Jane is a Visiting Assistant Professor in Accounting.  Jane is a graduate of our MBA program and is a CPA.

 

  • William “Bill” Richmond joins the Business Computer Information Systems faculty from the Texas A&M University as an Associate Professor.  Bill is a graduate of Purdue University and brings much work experience relevant to the systems area.

 

  • Barbara Jo White joins us from the University of Southern Mississippi as an Assistant Professor in Business Computer Information Systems.  She recently completed her dissertation and brings with her a varied background of work experiences and educational involvements.

 

  • Hong “Windy” Yin joins us from the University of Texas at Dallas as an Assistant Professor in Management teaching the quantitative skills area. She also recently completed her dissertation.  She brings several years of experience in the international business environment in China.

 

  • Vittal Anantatmula joins us from George Washington University as an Assistant Professor in Project Management.  Vittal received his doctoral degree from George Washington University and most recently served as program director for their Project Management Program.

 

  • Chris Birkel joins the Business Administration and Law faculty as a Visiting Assistant Professor.  Chris is a WCU graduate who later completed an MPP (Master of Public Policy) from Harvard University and JD from University of Michigan.  This fall Chris is teaching our Introduction to Business courses.

 

  • Jayne Zanglein joins the Business Administration and Law faculty as a Visiting Assistant Professor.  Jayne was most recently at The College of New Jersey teaching in the International Business/Management area.  She brings a wide variety of university teaching and administrative experience as well as professional experience from the legal profession.  Jayne’s spouse joined the music faculty this fall.

 

Faculty/Staff happenings:

 

  • Adrianne Gordon (SBTDC staff) was recently promoted to Business Counselor I.   Adrianne is also soon to become a WCU alumnus scheduled to complete requirement for her MBA degree in December, 2005.  Congratulations, Adrianne!

 

  • Cynthia Deale (faculty – Hospitality and Tourism) was recognized this summer with the John Wiley & Sons Award for Innovation in Teaching for 2005 at the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE) conference held in Las Vegas, NV.  Congratulations Cynthia on the recognition!

 

  • Tom Fleckenstein (SBTDC staff) will be competing this weekend (September 2-4) in the Big Red Chili Cookoff (www.maggievalleyfestivals.com) International Chili Society Sanctioned Chili Cookoff!  We are talking some serious chili here.  This competition is one of the "last chance qualifiers" for a chance at the national title.  Expect to see chili cooks and styles from across the nation fighting it out for prize money, trophies, bragging rights and a shot at the national title!  You are also going to hear some of the best Country/Americana/Blues music to grace these parts. 

 

Alumni happenings:

 

  • John Richardson (MPM, ’96) was recently appointed as a Visiting Instructor for the College of Business, teaching in the financial planning area.  John works for VALIC Financial Advisors.  Welcome aboard, John!

 

  • Kenneth “Rusty” Edwards (BSBA- Business Administration and Law, ’92) was named Regional President for Eastern North Carolina and Virginia by RBC Centura Bank.  Edwards will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the bank’s retail and business banking operations in Eastern North Carolina and Virginia including consumer, small business, and community development lending activities.  He will be located in Rocky Mount, NC.  Congratulations, Rusty!

 

Accountancy, Finance, & Entrepreneurship News:

 

Chad Roope -2004 graduate will begin work on a Masters degree in International business and economics at UNC-Greensboro in January.

 

The 3rd Annual Fall Accountancy Banquet will be held on Friday, September 23, 2005 in the Multipurpose Room of the University Center.  The banquet kicks off the new academic year with a social hour beginning at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner and a short program at 7:00 pm.  This is a great opportunity for alumni to reconnect with friends and faculty.  For further information contact Susan Swanger at swanger@wcu.edu or Dona Potts at dpotts@wcu.edu.
