Scholarship Criteria

2004-2005 - THE CAROLINAS CHAPTER - WCU-CMAA - STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Carolinas Chapter of the CMAA has added to its mission of encouraging educational opportunity by providing a partial scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year to one WCU-CMAA Student Chapter member who is pursuing a career in club management.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The Carolinas Chapter of the CMAA will award one (1) scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year in the amount of $1,500. The Scholarship award will be made at the recommendation of the Carolinas Chapter of CMAA WCU Scholarship Committee and approved by the Board of Directors of the Carolinas Chapter CMAA. The scholarship award will be made directly to the Financial Aid Office at Western Carolina University by July 1, 2004.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Any individual who is actively seeking a managerial career in the private club industry, is a currently enrolled full-time student at Western Carolina University, has a declared major or minor in the Hospitality and Tourism degree program, and is a member in good standing of the WCU-CMAA Student Chapter may apply to the Carolinas Chapter CMAA WCU Scholarship Committee for this scholarship award.

CRITERIA
Qualified candidates must provide strong evidence that they are pursuing managerial careers in the private club industry. A candidate must have completed his/her freshman year of college and be enrolled for the full 2004-2005 academic year at Western Carolina University. In addition, the candidate must have achieved and continue to maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
To apply for the WCU-CMAA Student Chapter Scholarship, you must do all of the following:

  1. Complete and submit scholarship application.
  2. Write an essay (between 500-1000 words) addressing the following components:
    A. Your career objectives and goals.
    B. The characteristics you possess that will enable you to succeed as a club manager.
    C. How your experiences with CMAA has shaped your perception of the Association and the private club industry.
    D. Your specific interests within the private club management field.
    E. Why you feel that you should be a scholarship recipient.
  3. Attach a copy of your college transcript(s) through Spring 2004 to the completed application.
  4. Include recommendations (2 minimum) from club/hospitality industry professionals and an advisor/professor.
  5. Include a copy of your current resume.
  6. Submit items 1 - 5 to Professor Sandra GrunweIl, 114 Belk Building, WCU.

Please note: Application, essay and other required attachments must be typed. Points are awarded for overall presentation. Application form is available online at www.wcu.edu/aps/hes under Student Associations.

All information must be received by May 10, 2004. There are no exceptions. Each applicant will be notified by mail whether or not he/she has been awarded a scholarship. Decisions on awards will be made by June 1, 2004 and award money will be sent directly to the Financial Aid Office.
