Filling
Faculty Vacancies
All faculty positions
which become vacant at any time for whatever reason (retirement, resignation,
non-reappointment, etc.) must be justified before any authorization
to recruit for filling the position will be given. The procedure to
be used will be as follows:
1. The head
of the department affected will prepare a memorandum describing
the vacancy which has occurred, or is about to occur. In this memorandum,
the department head should indicate the reason for the vacancy,
the length of the time the position is expected to be vacant, justification
for retaining the position (if the department head wishes to request
retention), plan for filling the position, and approximate cost
of the replacement.
2. The department
head will forward this memorandum to the appropriate dean for endorsement.
3. The dean
will review the request and will forward the memorandum with his
recommendation to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs who will
make the decision on filling the position and so inform the dean.
In making his decision, the Vice Chancellor will be guided by the
policies and priorities established by the Chancellor.
Vacant positions
used by departments and schools primarily for supporting part-time
positions and graduate assistants will be justified annually at the
time the annual budget hearings are conducted.
Department heads
are reminded that it is inappropriate for verbal or written commitments
or offers of positions to be made without the approval of the appropriate
officials.
