Equal Opportunity Programs

 

 

Equal Opportunity Programs at Western Carolina University are administered by the Assistant to the Chancellor for Equity and the Director of Affirmative Action Programs/Title IX Coordinator.

 

The Assistant to the Chancellor for Equity is responsible for the following:

 

  1. to assist in the development and implementation of the university's policies and programs regarding equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity, and to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws pertaining to non-discrimination and affirmative action;
  2. to receive and investigate complaints from students, faculty, and staff who have concerns about harassment or discrimination on the basis of the individual's race, age, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, disability, political affiliation, or sexual orientation in any of the university's activities and programs;
  3. to mediate disputes when appropriate; and
  4. to represent the university in dealings with governmental and other agencies charged with equal opportunity programs compliance and enforcement.

 

The Director of Affirmative Action Programs/Title IX Coordinator is responsible for the following:

 

  1. to ensure that university policies and programs are in compliance with Executive Order 11246 and the requirements of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs;
  2. to assist in the development and implementation of the university's policies and programs regarding equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity, and to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws pertaining to non-discrimination and affirmative action; and
  3. to ensure that university policies and programs are in compliance with Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 and that the university does not discriminate on the basis of sex in any of its educational activities and programs.
