Athletic
Staff Appointments, Reappointments, and Tenure
The policies which will govern the appointment, reappointment, and
eligibility for academic rank and tenure of personnel having coaching
responsibilities in intercollegiate athletics, to be effective on
the date of this memorandum, are as follows:
-
The Director
of Athletics, Head Football Coach, Head Basketball Coach, Assistant
Director of Athletics, and other full-time members of the Intercollegiate
Athletics staff are appointed by the Chancellor and are eligible
for reappointment on an annual basis for an indefinite period.
The award of academic rank at the level of instructor is optional,
subject to approval by the appropriate department head. Appointees
are not eligible for tenure or professorial rank above instructor.
-
Assistant
coaches of football and basketball whose responsibilities include
part-time teaching but whose primary responsibility is coaching
are eligible for appointment on an annual basis for an indefinite
period. The Director of Athletics is primarily responsible for
the recruitment, appointment, reappointment, and salary determination
of these members of the intercollegiate coaching staff in consultation
with the head of the appropriate teaching department. Appointment
and reappointment to the teaching faculty at the rank of instructor
is contingent upon recommendation by the appropriate department
head, dean, and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs using procedures
applying to faculty appointments generally. Individuals in this
category are not eligible for tenure or professorial rank above
instructor.
- Other persons
whose duties may include intercollegiate coaching but whose primary
responsibility is teaching are eligible for appointment to any appropriate
professorial rank. Recruitment, appointment, reappointment, and
salary determination are the responsibility of the Head of the Department
of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (or, if appropriate,
another teaching department), contingent upon consultation with
the Director of Athletics. These persons are eligible for promotion
and tenure in the appropriate teaching department subject to the
departmental, school, and institutional policies and procedures
which govern the appointment, reappointment, tenure, and promotion
of the faculty at Western Carolina University.
