III. New Business
a. Volleyball Coach Manuel Concepcion spoke with the committee. He sees a lot of potential with the team and said he has been emphasizing a “back to basics” approach. He will also bring in some new players including two from Puerto Rico. He also plans to recruit heavily in the state of North Carolina.
b. The Academic Support Services Subcommittee delivered a preliminary report. Members of the subcommittee (along with committee chair Sue Swanger) toured the facilities in the Jordan-Phillips Field House. Members of the subcommittee noted that Academic Support Services shares a room with the WCU Human Resources department. The subcommittee also reported that the computer lab needs to be updated. One suggestion was to get IT to take over the lab. This option may mean that the lab would be open to all students but this would be an improvement from the current situation. A member of the full committee mentioned that like all students, student-athletes pay an education and technology fee and wondered whether a portion of this fee could be used to update the lab. Another full committee member suggested that the Athletics department consider changing standards for freshmen (exempting more freshman from required study hours) to alleviate the pressure on the facility.
c. The committee discussed potential issues for 2009-2010. Topics include class scheduling and continued problems finding times for team practice and ways to get better faculty participation in completing progress reports for student-athletes.
