WCU Athletics Committee
Meeting of 11 April 2008
Present: Swanger, Cipriano, Cooper, Boan, Beaudet, Causby, Smith, Brown, Knotts, Cantler, and Abel.
Not Present: Grube, Wooten, Menickelli, Mickelsson, Walker, McCoy, Wilfong
Meeting called to order at 1205 in the UC Rogers Room.
I. Approval of Minutes – minutes from previous meeting will be available at next meeting.
II. Old Business
- A recent appeal decision overruled the decision of the Athletic Department.
- A basketball player’s request to transfer was denied.
- Coach Wagner has been invited to a future meeting of the committee.
III. New Business
- Chip Smith went over the budget/handout
- went over the budget line by line explaining each
- explained that athletics can receive no money which arises from state appropriatons
- said there was a rising cost of secondary insurance
- explained the effect of Davidson’s post season appearances on the conference and conference funding
- explained the different scholarship numbers for Women’s BB and Men’s BB
- said that the difference between the budget of $6.0 million and the summary (expenses) of $6.4 million was the salaries for coach teaching
- said that guarantee money goes to the respective teams except for Football
- responded that in order to achieve equity for scholarships overall, more money is made available to Women’s Track and Golf than to Men’s Track and Golf
- Fred Cantler said that though Football had scheduled practice at 0600 in the morning to allow athletes to be students, there continued to be class scheduling/practice time conflicts, but that an absentee policy favorable to athletes was currently before the Academic Policy Review Council
- Boan, Cooper, and Menickelli will provide a report of academic support services for student-athletes at the next meeting
IV. Next meeting at 12 noon on 25 April 2008 in the UC Rogers Room.
