University Athletics Committee
Meeting of March 30, 2009

Present: Knotts, Causby, Gift, Boan-Lenzo, Ha, Mau, Wilfong, Swayne, Swanger, Smith, Cantler, Mayo

I. Approval of Minutes – Minutes from previous meeting were approved.

II. Old Business-We discussed recommendations for increasing participation of professors responding to academic progress reports.

III. New Business
a. Football Head Coach Dennis Wagner discussed the continuing challenges of finding a time to practice. After reviewing the student-athletes schedules there were 20+ conflicts in the afternoon and 8+ conflicts in the morning. We talked about the possibility of a dead-time in the afternoon for meetings and practices. Gibbs will take this issue to the provost’s office. Denise Wilfong suggested some public relations outreach between athletics and the academic departments. Members of the committee could visit departments, folks could speak at college meetings, or Athletics could be an agenda item on an upcoming Department Head Workshop.
b. Fred Cantler provided an overview of scheduling. He discussed his considerations before approving team travel. There was some discussion about problems with some teams leaving earlier than permitted.
c. Fred Cantler provided an update on the Gender and Minority Equity plan. Chancellor Bardo has created a separate committee to address this issue.
