University Athletics Committee
Meeting of February 23, 2009

a. Update from Head Soccer Coach, Tammy DeCesare. Coach DeCasare noted the top- rate facilities at WCU. She also praised the Admissions Office and the Academic Support Services. She appreciated the rapport between the coaches and the professors and mentioned her team’s strong academic performance. In 2006-2007 they had one of the top GPAs in the country. She said it was very difficult to find a convenient time to practice, noting that her team has practiced at 8:00 p.m. She would like the university to consider a “Catamount Rewards Program” and make better use of campus televisions to broadcast sporting events and highlights. She also would like to have the opportunity to provide graduate assistantship opportunities with the soccer program.
b. Fred Cantler provided an overview of the budget situation. He discussed the Southern Conference’s Cost Containment Measures and also previewed budget saving measures by the Department of Athletics.
c. Justin Menickelli reported on the results of a February 2009 appeal. The decision to deny a transfer request for a student-athlete was upheld by the committee.
