Chancellor's Update – February 6, 2004
PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO EMAIL
Rick Collings notified the campus community late yesterday that he has accepted the position of President of Wayne State College in Nebraska. This is an important move for Rick and his family and it represents a significant milestone in a fine academic career. On a personal note, I know that both he and Marilyn will be missed. They are both very fine people and they will be great assets to any community. We all wish them well.
Although the timing of Rick’s departure is not finally set, it may be necessary to appoint an interim vice chancellor for a few months while we complete the search for a Provost. Once we have a more firm sense of the time frame of Rick’s departure, I will be back with you regarding plans for an interim.
In the meantime, we will proceed with the search for the Provost. The Provost will serve both as the chief academic officer and as the senior vice chancellor. He/she will have responsibilities that extend beyond the Division of Academic Affairs. Therefore, it is important that, in addition to the normal academic representatives, the search committee have members from other areas of the institution.
I have requested that Noelle Kehrberg chair the search committee and that each college dean, the library, other areas of Academic Affairs, and the administrative divisions all nominate representatives for the committee. In addition, I have asked Heather List, president of the student body, and Riccardo McClendon to represent students on this committee.
Because we want to have a Provost on campus for the start of the next academic year, I have contracted with the Academic Search Consultation Service to provide professional recruiting assistance. They have a strong track record of successfully completing searches in a relatively short time frame.
I am cognizant that the academic year ends in early May. However, I believe that we can move forward with the search so that finalists can be interviewed on campus before the end of the term. The Provost’s position is critical for the institution. I encourage all members of the campus community to take part in the open forums with the candidates.
Thank you, and I look forward to working with you as we search for a new academic leader.
