Participation in the Spring 2009 professional development events below is open to those in the WNC EdNet consortium, which includes educators in these LEAs: Cherokee, Cherokee Central, Clay, Graham, Macon, Jackson and Swain. Note that SCC and WCU are also providing free professional development events on this calendar. Please note carefully the name and email address of the person in the last column to contact in order to register. If a seat limitation is reached, the instructor will keep your name on a waiting list and inform that the current session is full. If a repeat session is planned, you will be notified.

Internet Safety Instruction: Telling kids what they must know to be safe in a Digital World Thursday, February 12th, 1-3 pm Murphy High School Media Center, Target Audience: Counselors, Principals, Curriculum Design and Computer Skills Instructors 60  Recently mandates were passed requiring the instruction of internet safety standards and education, as well as internet bullying and social networking sites for all students grades K-12 in NC public schools. Cherokee Susan Maxey and Kim Loudermilk, Instructors.  INTEL – Thinking with Technology Using Technology to promote 21st Century Skills Jan. 20th, 27th, Feb. 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, March 2nd, 9th (3:30 – 6:30 pm)   Murphy Middle School Lab 121 (3:30 – 6:30 pm)    This 24-hour class will help you use the concept of Backward Design to teach content and thinking skills to your students. The class will use Internet-based tools to build 21st century skills for teaching higher-order thinking skills integrated with your content area. Teachers will learn how to effectively build lessons that promote critical thinking through the use of technology. Lesson plans will be developed, and they will be tested within the classroom setting for practical feedback and teacher reflection.
