The CAT Center offers FREE small-group tutoring for most 100 and 200-level classes. In addition to tutoring, the CAT Center also offers Academic Skills Workshops to help students improve their study skills. Instructors are invited to refer students to these workshops or build them into their course syllabi.

Here's what we can do for you:

 
  • NEW FOR FACULTY:  Provide resources for incorporating fundamental Academic Skills into your classes.  Visit our Academic Skills Resource Page for easy-to-use activities relating to Time Management, Note Taking, Memory Skills, and more.
 
  • Supply you with information about the students who attend tutoring sessions for your class. To access information about your students' visits to the CAT Center, click here.
 
  • Provide a quick-and-easy way for you to promote the CAT Center's services to your students.  Simply cut and paste this description into your course syllabus:

The Catamount Academic Tutoring (CAT) Center offers FREE small-group tutoring and Academic Skill Workshops to help students improve their study techniques.  Sign up for appointments in advance using the online scheduling system (www.wcu.edu/catcenter/schedule.htm), by calling 227-2774, or by visiting the center in 30 Hunter Library.  Students are expected to arrive for tutoring sessions on time and prepared with class notes, readings, assignments, and a list of questions they have about the material.  A schedule of Academic Skill Workshops is available at www.wcu.edu/catcenter/workshops.html.

 
  • Hire tutors whom you recommend. If you know an outstanding student whom you would like to recommend for a tutoring position in the CAT Center, please send the student's name and contact information to Chesney Reich. We may also contact you for recommendations if there is a tutoring position in the Center that needs to be filled.
 
  • Notify you of services available for your students. At the beginning of the semester, you will receive an email notifying you of the tutors assigned to your course. The email will also contain printable flyers that you can link to your course website or post in your office or classroom.
 
  • Help students meet your academic expectations. During the first few weeks of the semester, tutors will contact you to discuss your course syllabi and expectations. They will maintain contact throughout the semester to ensure that tutoring sessions correspond with the course content.
 
  • Offer in-class presentations about the CAT Center's services. Both tutors and the CAT Center Director are available to make visits to your classes to introduce these services to the students.
 
 
  • Provide you with publications you can use to remind students of our services:
    • Academic Success Center bookmarks contain contact information and Web site addresses for the CAT, Writing, Math Tutoring, and Student Technology Assistance Centers.
    • The Spring 2008 Academic Success Center flyer contains detailed information about all of the Success Centers, including the CAT Center and Student Technology Assistance Center Workshop Schedules.
