Delegates' frequently asked questions

What is Assembly, and what do we do there?

Faculty Assembly is the official governing body of the 16 constituent institutions of the UNC System. We attend four times a year for an all-day meeting, and each delegate serves on a committee.

Our official actions are recommendations to administrators, campuses, and boards in the form of resolutions or requests. However, a quick look at the UNC Code will show you that UNC faculty's resolutions are only advisory and not always heeded. So the most important thing we do is share information.

What are an assembly delegate's duties?

An assembly delegate attends four meetings a year, serves on a committee, and votes with the entire body. Because WCU has a very small delegation compared to most schools, your attendance is extremely important. If you can't attend, notify one of our alternates as soon as possible so he or she can plan to attend.

What does an alternate do?

An alternate serves when a regular delegate can't attend. The alternate sits on the same committee as the absent delegate and votes in that delegate's place. Alernates may also take over as delegates when delegates leave in the middle of a term.

While alternates don't always attend meetings, they can participate in the online discussions and unofficial polls, and they can always suggest agenda items. Anyone can contact a committee or the body at large by email.

How long do we serve?

At WCU we serve a three-year term and then we are eligible to run for a second term. The Assembly's by-laws prohibit serving longer than six consecutive years. The only exception to this rule is for ex officio members. For example, some schools always include their senate chair in their delegation. Senate chairs and other such ex officio delegates can serve as long as their term lasts.

Who makes the speech at the beginning of the year, and who reports to senate?

WCU's current policy is for the senior delegate to make these reports. The senior delegate is the delegate whose current consecutive term is the longest.

What if I can't attend a meeting?

Notify an alternate as soon as possible. Don't wait until the week before--after all, we all need to plan.

Where is it? Where should I stay? How do I get reimbursed?

Faculty Assembly is held at the General Administration Building in Chapel Hill, 283.1 miles each way from Western (get directions).

Assembly delegates get reimbursed at the state rate. The state hotel rate is now $57.25 per night. Some hotels will give you the state rate if you ask for it, but that doesn't always include tax. WCU delegates can get reimbursed for two nights because we live far away.

Visit the Assembly page to download reimbursement forms, find out about hotel rates, or ask for help. Since the state is broke, file promptly, and don't claim the Friday free lunch when you fill out your form--they'll send it back.

How do I contact my delegaton?

You can view the WCU assembly site, the main assembly site, or send an email to wcu@ncfaculty.com.
