Majoring or minoring in Philosophy and Religion

 

Thinking of joining the lawyers, doctors, economists, directors, artists, theologians, and scientists who majored in Philosophy or Religion? You're in the right place.

Do you already have a major you combine with a healthy diet of critical thinking? The Philosophy major requires fewer hours than almost any other major at WCU, so picking up a second major with us is easy. We also offer some great minors. 

Major in Philosophy, B. A. Degree
Philosophy Concentration

Liberal Studies, 42 hours.
The major in Philosophy with a Philosophy concentration requires MFL 231-232 or 240, (6 hours) and 30 hours as follows:

I. Foundations of Humanities (6 hours)

  • PAR 102: Western Moral Traditions (3 hours)
  • PAR 230: Legal, Scientific, and Critical Reasoning (3 hours)

II. History of Philosophy (9 hours)

  • PAR 304* : Justice, Power, & Human Nature in the Ancient Greek Polis
  • PAR 305: Medieval & Reformation Theology: Divine Foreknowledge, Free Will, & Justification by Faith,
  • PAR 306* : Science, Reason, & Autonomy in the Enlightenment
  • PAR 307: From Existentialism to Feminism,
  • PAR 308: From Pragmatism to Postmodernism

* denotes required courses in the History of Philosophy sequence.

III. Philosophy and Culture (9 hours) Electives selected from:

  • PAR 310: Philosophy of Art
  • PAR 311: Religion and Science
  • PAR 312: Philosophy of Religion
  • PAR 314: Religion, Suffering, and the Moral Imagination
  • PAR 313: Philosophy of Law
  • PAR 316: Philosophy In and Of Film
  • PAR 330: American Wilderness Ethics & Aesthetics
  • PAR 332: Biomedical Ethics & Social Justice
  • PAR 333: Environmental Ethics & Public Policy
  • PAR 350: Philosophical and Religious Classics

IV. Senior Seminar and Topics (6 hours)

  • PAR 393: Topics in Philosophy or PAR 350: Philosophical and Religious Classics
  • PAR 495: Seminar in Philosophy and Religion

University Requirements: To complete the Bachelor of Arts program in the Arts & Sciences College, a total of 50 hours is required, which includes at least 12 hours of general (free) electives. At least 32 hours of the courses taken at Western must be at the junior-senior level to meet one of the University's degree requirements. Only grades of C (2.0) or higher satisfy requirements for the major.

Minor in Philosophy

18 hours: PHIL 102, 230,  and 12 hours of electives selected from junior-senior Philosophy/Religion courses.  

Minor in Religion

The minor requires 18 hours, including PAR 105, 106, and either PAR 202 or PAR 312 and 9 hours of electives selected from junior-senior Philosophy and Religion courses or ANTH 365; ART 306; ENG 390, 420, 440; HIST 311, 313, 375, 412, 455.
