Mark Holliday presented a paper, "A Web-Based Introduction to Computer Networks", at the Third Annual Conference on Integrating Technology into Computer Science Education in Dublin, Ireland on August 18-21, 1998.
Philosophy and Religion
James McLachlan presented "Beryaev's Critique of Sartre's Anthology" at the International Whitehead Conference at Claremont School of Theology, Claremont, CA, August 4-9, 1998. He also presented, "Kenosis and A Mormon Idea of Atonement" presented at the Sunstone East Symposium, Washington D.C. November 20-21; "Personalist Appreciations and Reservations about Process Theology" presented at the North Carolina Religious Studies Association at Fayetteville State University, October 2, 1998; "Persons, Creativity, Freedom and God: Some Mormon Thoughts on Process Thought in Response to David Ray Griffin" was presented at the Sunstone Symposium, Salt Lake City Utah, July 28 to August 1, 1998. This paper was accepted for publication in Mormonism and Contemporary Christian Theology, David Paulsen, Ed. University of Illinois Pres. (In preparation) Dr. McLachlan also presented "The Ungrund and the Nonrational Given: The Finitude of God in Bohme and Brightman" presented at the Personalist Seminar at Western Carolina University, June, 1998. Mary Warner (English), Marsha Holmes (English), Sue Ellen Bridgers, and Dawn Gilchrist-Young (lecturer in English, currently teaching English at Swain County High School) presented a panel on Curriculums of Non-Violence at the North Carolina English Teachers Association Fall Conference in Wilmington on October 9-10, 1998. Mary Warner's paper is "Teaching the Madeleine L'Engle Tetrlogy: Using Allegory and Fantasy as Antidote to Violence."
Communication and Theatre Arts
John Slater attended a C-SPAN Seminar for Professors in Washington, D.C., August 6-7, 1998
Susan Brown-Strauss and Richard Beam, accompanied by four theatre students, (Department of Communications and Theatre Arts) attended the USITT-SE Master Classes (The American Association of Design and Production Professional in the Performing Arts-Southeast Section) at Middle Tennessee State University on September 11 and 12, 1998. Ms. Brown-Strauss has been involved with the USITT-SE Design Exhibition project since 1995 and has been co-commissioner of the USITT-SE Design and Technology Expo since 1997. The Design and Technology Expo includes a "Juried Exhibition of Faculty and Professionals in Design and Technology" and "Show and Tell" a Non-juried Student Exhibition as well as a Student Portfolio review. Dr. Beam's scenic designs for 1940's Radio Hour were entered in the Juried Exhibition of Faculty and Professionals in Design and Technology. Two theatre students, Will Pickens and Kevin Billings displayed their work in the student exhibition.
