History Honors Society: Phi Alpha Theta
History majors of exceptional merit are invited to join Phi Alpha Theta, the history honors society. Each semester, David Dorondo (Phi Alpha Theta faculty advisor) holds an induction ceremony. Members also participate in an annual book sale, the proceeds from which fund the activities of the organization.

Undergraduate Research Expo
For well over a decade, history students have participated in WCU's
Undergraduate Research Conference and Expo, and have participated in national
and regional conferences as well. Our department is also committed to expanding
student experiences beyond the classroom. Through courses such as local
history, oral history, and public history, students become actively involved in
research, community outreach, and interpretation. In short, they become
practicing historians.

Cooperative Education and Internships
Both undergraduate and graduate students have performed internships
and cooperative education experiences at places like the Library of Congress,
the Smithsonian, the North Carolina Department of Archives and History, WCU's
Mountain Heritage Center, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Museum
of the Cherokee Indian, the Atlanta History Center, Fort Smith National
Historic Site, Independence Park (Philadelphia), and elsewhere. Recently, one co-op student spent a summer
working with Wachovia Bank, and the department is committed to broadening the
types of educational experiences we offer our students. This experience not
only allows our students to apply what they learn in the classroom, but also to
develop valuable experience that they can apply to the job market or graduate
school. If you are interested in co-ops or internships, contact
Dr. Richard Starnes at (828) 227-3910.
