About Us

Western’s Writing Program combines the best of creative and professional writing courses with real-world experiences. The low student-faculty ratio in our courses allows students to get one-on-one guidance in poetry, creative non-fiction, and fiction writing from such well-known authors as Kathryn Stripling Byer and Rick Boyer, and to gain new perspectives from visiting writers and writers-in-residence. In recent years, Western or area bookstores have hosted workshops and readings by such writers as James Welch, Yusef Komunyakaa, Rosellen Brown, Lucille Clifton, Clifton Taulbert, Vikram Chandra , Eavan Boland, and Leslie Marmon Silko.

Learning Goals

Students will use primary and secondary sources to write at a professional level appropriate to the completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree; specifically, they will:

  1. Write in a grammatically correct, error-free style.
  2. Incorporate a style appropriate to the writing situation and audience.
  3. Incorporate primary and secondary sources properly as needed in a writing situation.
  4. Demonstrate in writing knowledge of libel law.
  5. Demonstrate in writing the ability to use proper professional formats (for example, in writing business documents, reports, short stories, and scripts).
