About
Us
Westerns Writing Program combines the best of creative
and professional
writing courses with real-world experiences. The low student-faculty
ratio in our courses allows students to get one-on-one guidance
in poetry, creative non-fiction, and fiction writing from
such well-known authors as Kathryn Stripling Byer and
Rick Boyer, and to gain new perspectives from visiting writers
and writers-in-residence. In recent years, Western or area
bookstores have hosted workshops and readings by such writers
as James Welch, Yusef Komunyakaa, Rosellen Brown, Lucille
Clifton, Clifton Taulbert, Vikram Chandra , Eavan Boland,
and Leslie Marmon Silko.

and audience.
- Incorporate primary and secondary sources properly as
needed in a writing situation.
- Demonstrate in writing knowledge of libel law.
- Demonstrate in writing the ability to use proper professional
formats (for example, in writing business documents, reports,
short stories, and scripts).
