Application Form

  • Spend eight weeks in the British Isles this summer.  Read literature in the places where it was inspired.  Study British history where it occurred.  Earn six hours of college credit.
  • Sign up for the following spring semester courses: Engl 480 and History 493.  These courses will focus upon the locations to be visited in the summer--their historical and literary significance--and provide you with a list of readings appropriate to the adventure.
  • Then in the summer you will travel with Dr. Karl Nicholas of the WCU English Department and Dr. Curtis Wood of the WCU History Department.  Under their guidance you will complete your courses of instruction.
  • Most of your instruction will be experiential: that is, you will read, explore, take notes, and discuss what you have discovered.  You will find that cities make great classrooms.
Live on five university campuses (click on location to see pictures from previous trips):

June 8-21 University of Surrey, Guildford England
June 21-July 5 University of Stirling, Bridge of Allen Scotland
July 5-19 York University, Heslington England
July 19-26 University of Warwick, Coventry  England
July 26-August 2 University of North London,  Islington England
  • WHILE IN SURREY—visit the southeast of England: Dover, Canterbury, Hastings, and Winchester. Tour a Roman Villa, a medieval cathedral, landscape  gardens, manor houses, and ancient castles.
  • WHILE IN STIRLING—explore the battleground of Bannockburn; steep yourself in Scots heritage by visiting historic sites and by reading selections from Scott, Stevenson, and Burns.  Tour Edinburgh, Glasgow, Culross, Dunblane—the haunts of  Wallace, Bruce, and Rob Roy. Visit Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, motor past the lochs: Loch Ness, Loch Lochie, and Loch Linnhe, stopping at Urquhart Castle and Glencoe.
  • WHILE IN YORK—scale the walls of the medieval town; attend evensong at the world’s second largest gothic cathedral; tour Fountain’s Abbey, Durham, Lindisfarne,  and Whitby,  visit  the Haworth of  the Bronte sisters and walk on their moors.  Cross the Pennines to the Lake District and follow footpaths familiar to Wordsworth, Coleridge, deQuincey, and Southey (and even Peter Rabbit).
  • WHILE IN WARWICK—visit bustling Birmingham, with its art museums and the Cadbury factory. Travel to Worcester and Bath, the Shropshire of Housman and Brother Cadfael and the Chester of the ancient Romans. See a Shakespearean play in the bard’s home of Stratford on Avon.
  • WHILE IN LONDON—live in a city with a history of two thousand years; explore its museums, galleries, theaters, and parks.  See Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey.  Walk in the footsteps of Chaucer, Johnson, Keats, Dickens, Eliot, Woolf and many others. See a Shakespeare play at the New Globe.

  •
THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS WILL BE LIMITED TO SIXTEEN
