English majors can apply for these scholarships

Ashby Wade Award for Excellence in Freshman Composition

Amount: $25.00
Must be a full-time freshman whose ability and promise as a writer have been deomonstrated by his/her composition in ENGL 101 and 102.

Instructors in the English department nominate students by presenting graded compositions, together with a letter of recommendation to a committee of judges (experienced Eglish instructors appointed each year by the Head of the English Department).


Crum Scholarship in English

Amount: $1,000.00 (depending on funds available)
Must be a full-time student with an English major. You must have a 3.0 GPA in Major and 2.5 GPA overall.

Apply at the English Department and the Scholarship Committee selects the winner. The Department Head will establish and advertise the scholarship winner annually. The student will be notified on Arts & Science Award Day.


McKevlin Award Sponsored by the English Club

Amount: Variable (depending on funds available)

Must be a full-time student with an undergraduate English majors and English minors. Must have a 3.75 GPA in English Courses and an overall GPA of at least 3.5. You must have completed at least 60 hours of college courses and 15 hours of WCU English Courses.

A completion application packet must include ALL of the following:

  • An application form (available in English office, Coulter 305)
  • A copy of college transcripts
  • 2 letters of recommendation from WCU English faculty
  • A writing sample: (1) this would be a paper written for an English class at WCU; (2) it should not exceed 10 pages 

(NOTE: because of logistical difficulties, writing samples will NOT be returned.)
All application materials must be submitted in a manila envelope with your name clearly printed on the outside. 

No incomplete applications packet will be considered.


NOMAD Literary Awards: Fiction Undergraduate Award

Amount: $25.00
Must be selected from fiction submitted to the NOMAD. Apply to NOMAD staff.

NOMAD Literary Awards: Poetry Graduate Award

Amount: $25.00

Must be selected from poetry submitted to the NOMAD. Apply to NOMAD staff.

NOMAD Literary Awards: Poetry Undergraduate Award

Amount: $25.00

Must be selected from poetry submitted to the NOMAD. Apply to NOMAD staff.

 

Sigma Tau Delta Award for Best Paper Presented
at WCU's Undergraduate Research Conference

Amount: Variable depending on funds available
Selection is based on observation of the presentation as well as the written paper.  The advisor(s) and the English faculty member are responsible for reading, ranking, and selecting the winning paper/presentation.

Apply to the advisor(s) of Sigma Tau Delta and English Faculty member selected by the current President of Sigma Tau Delta.
