Liaison Activities

Collections – I am responsible for the selection of biological monographic and audio-visual resources added to Hunter Library. The selection process is a collaboration between the Library and the Biology department; faculty recommendations are welcomed and faculty members are solicited for advice regarding specific resource selection.

As the science advocate for the acquisition of new journal titles and databases, I represent the Biology department to the Electronic Resources Group. This committee relies on statistics and written justifications from liaisons before approving recommended additions to Hunter Library’s resources.

Information Literacy Instruction – In pursuit of teaching students how to find, use, and evaluate information sources in the sciences, I provide instruction sessions for a variety of courses in Biology. These range from basic “how to use the library’s journals and databases” to more tailored instruction sessions for advanced classes. The goal is to enable students to learn effective searching techniques and to help them develop better strategies for evaluating and using the variety of sources used in pursuit of studies and in research.

I am always interested in furthering the partnership between the Biology department and the Library. I welcome the opportunity to work with professors and students in any way that will enhance the use and understanding of the myriad of biological resources.

Reference and Research Consultations – All interested students, faculty, and staff can contact me for both quick reference help as well as for in-depth research consultation assistance. I work routinely scheduled hours at Hunter Library’s Reference Desk but am always available to help those in need. Reference questions can be asked in person, by phone (227-2215) or by email (kschmidt@email.wcu.edu), while research consultations generally need to be scheduled by appointment. Feel free to contact me with any information-related questions, problems, or issues. No question is too small!
