I am trying to understand how ecological communities are naturally assembled and how they respond to environmental change. These are two basic and related ecological questions. The more we learn about them, the better we can answer questions about recreational use, resource use, non-native invasive plants, rare plants, etc. in natural areas. My work typically focuses on the plant component of forest communities and involves a combination of survey work and manipulative experiments to detect natural patterns and test questions that drive the research.
