artist statement - Susan Lucier
Many people, I believe, tend to think of things in terms of absolutes, but
the world isn't usually a stark contrast between two polar opposites. In my
art, I try to embrace and express the ambiguous gray. Irony, paradox,
duality, satire- these things have always intrigued me. My work is full of
contrasts coming together. Fine art and low art, for one. Painterly
abstraction and graphic imagery for another. Benign cartoons in dire
situations. Happiness in tragedy, and the reverse. Chaos in the midst of
Order, stupidity in the face of Wisdom. Life in death- who better to tackle
death than a cartoon character, who can live after countless pianos dropped
on its head? In my art, I would like very much to turn the structure of the
world on its head.
