Mathematics & Computer Science:
Students and Alumni

Students and Alumni

Students in mathematics and computer science compete and present around the nation; they also actively participate in club functions. Over the last four years, students have given presentations at the National Undergraduate Research Conference and the regional meeting of the Mathematics Association of America.

They have also participated in the National Mathematics Modeling Contest, in which students must devise mathematical models for such real-world problems as determining and rewarding faculty merit, detecting submarines, and describing a hunting strategy for a single velociraptor stalking and chasing a single thescelosaurus. Last year Phillip Rash, who graduated in Spring of 1999, was named a USA Today All-American Scholar.

Department students participate in several clubs. Western's "Beta" chapter of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics was the second chartered in this state. The student chapter of the Mathematics Assocation of America holds book sales and sponsors hikes and picnics. Computing majors can join a chapter of A.C.M. (Association for Computing Machinery). Last year, students had the chance to solve a staged murder mystery. They concluded that fellow faculty members had "done in" the victim at an academic conference.
