English:
First-Class Research

Students can learn from teachers who do important work in their fields. English faculty are active in all areas of research. A few recent examples:

  • Mae Miller-Claxton is the Web Editor for the McMichael Anthology of American literature.
  • Mimi Fenton is on the cutting edge of Milton scholarship, applying chaos theory to gain a new understanding of this major seventeenth century poet's work.
  • Brian Gastle studies medieval mercantile writing, Marsha Holmes is working in computers and composition, Mark Honegger is engaged in the study of linguistics, Sandra Saunders specializes in Byron, and Hal Farwell has almost completed a book on the theme of Madame Butterfly in literature.
  • Brian Railsback, Newton Smith, Karl Nicholas, and Jim Nicholl have recently published volumes on authors such as John Steinbeck and Jesse Stewart and on subjects such as Rhetoric and Composition. Mary Warner's recently edited book, Winning Ways of Coaching Writing, is in press.
  • Mary Adams, Kay Byer, and Rick Boyer have published several books of fiction and poetry. Joe Meigs is seeking a publisher for his new novel, Tenure Track. Catherine Carter and James Addison have published many poems and short stories.
  • Elizabeth Addison and Gayle Miller were recent recipients of the prestigious Hunter Scholar award. Several members of the department have been awarded Summer Research Grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
  • All of the English department faculty work and publish in the fields they teach. Students can feel confident that they are learning from accomplished professionals.
