English: Aesthetics in a Changing World

"An English degree is sought out and listed more often by employers than any major", says Dr. Mary Adams. Dr. Newton Smith adds, "An English degree from Western provides students with one of the most well-rounded educations available. Not only can you write well and obtain a vast knowledge of the great American and British writers, but you also gain competence in current technology. There is not much you cannot do in today's world with an English degree."

Dr. James Byer, head of the English Department, believes today's English Department better prepares students for the working world. "The department is making a strong effort to keep up with developing technology in areas of professional writing and literary research while preserving the humanistic values embodied in great literature of the past," he notes. "We are trying to balance our commitment to the aesthetic and humanistic values with the necessity of preparing students for the changing world. The department grows by defending and defining the role of humanities in an increasingly diverse world." The English department considers the best interests of students as they develop and grow, but it remains grounded with the great classics of literary influences in history.
